Bag of Live Bombs Found in Field in West Bengal’s Murshidabad, Police Investigate

The CSR Journal Magazine

A major security alert was triggered in the Shamsherganj area of Murshidabad district on Monday after a bag filled with live crude bombs was recovered from an agricultural field. The discovery, made early Monday morning, caused widespread panic in the Bhavaniabati Hatpara area near a local culvert, which falls under the Jangipur Police District.

Police sources confirmed that the Shamsherganj police station received information late Sunday night about the presence of bombs near the culvert in the Bhavaniabati Hatpara area. Officers rushed to the scene and, during a search, found the bag of live explosives in a cultivated field. The area was immediately cordoned off, and the bomb squad was summoned.

The Bomb Disposal Squad is scheduled to defuse the explosives on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the local police are conducting a fresh search of the surrounding fields and have launched an investigation to ascertain the identity of the perpetrators and the motive behind planting the explosives in a public area.

Local residents have expressed grave concern over the incident, demanding a thorough investigation into who placed the bombs in the agricultural land close to the culvert.

Recent Precedence and Border Security Concerns

The recovery of live crude bombs is not an isolated incident in the Murshidabad district, which shares a long and often porous border with Bangladesh. The area has frequently been a flashpoint for such discoveries and explosions, often linked to political violence, illicit bomb-making, or criminal activities.

Past Incidents:

There have been several reports in recent years of crude bomb recoveries and explosions. For instance, in December 2024, three people were killed in a crude bomb explosion in the Sagarpara area, suspected to have occurred during the assembly of the bombs. Similar incidents, including the recovery of multiple bombs and explosions injuring people, have been reported across the district, with political leaders often accusing rival factions of stockpiling explosives.

Bordering Districts Security:

Murshidabad, along with other West Bengal districts bordering Bangladesh (like Malda, North 24 Parganas, and Nadia), faces significant security challenges. Key concerns include:

Illegal Migration and Smuggling:

The porous Indo-Bangladesh border facilitates the illegal movement of people, drugs, gold, and cattle, creating vulnerabilities for criminal and anti-national elements.

Militant Activity:

Intelligence inputs have on occasion indicated plans by Bangladesh-based fundamentalist groups, such as Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT), to set up modules or sleeper cells in minority-dominated border districts, including Murshidabad.

Use of Explosives:

The frequent recovery of crude bombs highlights an alarming circulation of explosives, which poses a persistent threat to law and order, particularly during election periods. Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies maintain high alert, intensifying surveillance to thwart illegal cross-border activities and address these threats.
