Tensions reached a breaking point in Magrahat on Monday as Special Observer C. Murugan’s vehicle was attacked during an official site visit. Despite the targeted violence and a reported lack of security, a defiant Murugan asserted that he would complete the mission assigned to him by the Election Commission.
Chaos at the Hearing Center
The unrest began on Monday morning while Murugan was visiting a local school, which served as a hearing center, to verify official documents and consult with micro-observers. Initially, a crowd of approximately one hundred people gathered near the school premises. While officers from the Usthi Police Station arrived to manage the situation and initially appeared to de-escalate the tension, the peace was short-lived.
The Ambush and Security Breach
The situation turned violent as the Special Observer departed from the Magrahat Block 2 office toward a nearby ITI college. A mob reportedly surrounded the vehicle, shattering the windows and attempting to forcibly drag the driver out after breaking the door locks.
The driver, visibly shaken by the encounter, highlighted a significant lapse in protection. “There was no police force provided. The Superintendent of Police should have ensured security, but we were given no protection at all,” he stated, describing how a group of women surrounded the car and began the assault.
“I Will Finish the Job”: Murugan’s Stance
Despite the harrowing experience, C. Murugan remained steadfast. Addressing the media after the incident, he expressed his commitment to his constitutional duties.
“The Election Commission has entrusted me with a specific responsibility. I came here to work, and I will finish that work regardless of these actions,” Murugan declared.
Reporting to the Commission
The attack has raised serious questions regarding the safety of high-level officials on the ground. Observers noted that Murugan had been traveling to various locations since the morning without a pilot car or an adequate security detail.
Murugan has confirmed that he is compiling a detailed report of the incident and the security failures, which will be submitted formally to the Election Commission for further action.
