West Bengal CM Announces Implementation of Uniform Civil Code

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the state will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating it will follow the procedures previously established in Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Assam. This declaration was made on June 26, during a press briefing where he outlined the government’s plans regarding the UCC.

Adhikari mentioned that a committee has been formed, led by a sitting inquiry authority, to oversee the implementation process. He indicated that more detailed information concerning the UCC will be presented in the legislative Assembly on the coming Monday. This step marks a significant political pledge from the current administration.

The UCC Bill, which was introduced to the Assembly on May 25, aims to ban polygamy and make the registration of live-in relationships mandatory. The proposed code seeks to create a unified civil legal structure for issues such as marriage, divorce, and succession that applies to all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations.

Political Context of UCC Initiatives

The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code has been a central commitment within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manifesto for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Adhikari’s announcement indicates the government’s intention to follow through on this promise as part of its broader political strategy to reshape governance in the state.

In his address, Adhikari also took the opportunity to criticise the previous government led by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He alleged that their policies were characterised by appeasement, corruption, and nepotism, which, according to him, resulted in a regression for the state’s development. These allegations serve to reinforce the guiding principles of the current administration.

The Chief Minister asserted that the previous government’s policies amounted to neglecting key issues of nationalism and patriotism, suggesting a sharp contrast with the current administration’s focus on these values. He expressed confidence that under the new governance, significant changes will occur in various sectors.

Development Initiatives Under Current Government

Adhikari’s administration has already embarked on a series of development projects and welfare schemes, which he attributes to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During a prior media briefing on June 12, he shared updates on initiatives covering aspects of national security and public welfare, highlighting the government’s active involvement in improving the state’s socio-economic conditions.

He praised the benefits of a “double-engine” government model, signalling that the collaboration between the central and state governments is expected to yield tangible results for the citizens of West Bengal. Achievements in the early months of his tenure have been pointed out as indicators of the progress under Modi’s guidance and blessings.

The Chief Minister’s optimism regarding future outcomes is based on the belief that the benefits already noticed amongst the populace will continue to grow. As the government prepares to present more information about the UCC and its other initiatives, the anticipation surrounding the assembly session on Monday remains high among stakeholders and citizens alike.
