Vijay Has Chosen Rahul Gandhi As PM Candidate, Says Tamil Nadu Congress Leader

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Tamil Nadu Congress Legislature Party leader, Tharahai Cuthbert, announced on Monday that Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has endorsed Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the alliance. This statement counters any suggestions of a rift between the ruling party and its ally, clarifying that the Chief Minister’s stance is unequivocal. Cuthbert emphasised that the Congress party is advancing its agenda independently, rather than operating under the influence of the Tamil Nadu Vanniyar Katchi (TVK).

In her remarks to the media, Cuthbert also responded to the recent FIR lodged against Rahul Gandhi in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, labelling it an indication of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) political anxiety. Furthermore, she explained that her recent change of seat in the state Assembly was merely procedural, following her appointment as the Congress floor leader.

Cuthbert Elaborates on Party Dynamics and Growth

Cuthbert made it clear that any discussions regarding Vijay’s potential candidacy for the Prime Minister’s position stem from the enthusiasm exhibited by party workers. She underscored that these reflections do not represent an official position from the leadership. “The Chief Minister has identified Rahul Gandhi as the candidate for PM. That is the direction he is taking,” she remarked.

Addressing comments from Congress minister Vishwanathan, Cuthbert asserted that the Congress party is independently expanding its influence and is not in a subordinate role to the TVK. She reiterated that the organisation stands as a democratic and autonomous entity within the political landscape.

According to Cuthbert, the FIR against Gandhi demonstrates the BJP’s concerns regarding the significant support he enjoys among the populace. She articulated confidence in Gandhi’s prospects, predicting that he would assume the role of Prime Minister by the year 2029.

Cuthbert Discusses Assembly Changes and Leadership Position

Cuthbert also elaborated on her recent change in seating arrangement within the Tamil Nadu Assembly, explaining that it is a standard procedure associated with her promotion to the role of Congress floor leader. She was appointed to this position on August 13, 2026, and following this change, she was allocated a prominent seat in the Assembly on August 31, 2026, which is typically reserved for leaders of opposition parties.

In summary, Cuthbert’s statements confirm Vijay’s support for Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate, dismiss any concerns of a fractured relationship between the allies, and assert the Congress party’s right to operate independently. Additionally, she expressed criticism of the FIR against Gandhi and stated that the adjustment of her seat in the Assembly was purely procedural due to her new leadership responsibilities.

Cuthbert’s assertions reinforce the Congress party’s strategic direction, showcasing the commitment of its leaders to enhance their visibility and influence within the political framework in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
