Vignesh Shivan Addresses Controversy Surrounding ‘Normal People’ Comments

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vignesh Shivan has recently spoken out about the controversy related to his comments on ‘normal people,’ which drew scrutiny towards him and his wife, actress Nayanthara. During an interview, Shivan detailed the context of the remarks made at an event promoting their sanitary napkin brand, Femi9, and the ensuing backlash that followed.

The controversy began when a video surfaced featuring Shivan’s manager addressing the crowd at the event by saying, “Please cooperate; they’re not normal people.” This statement quickly went viral, generating significant criticism from influencers present at the venue, who felt the couple was being given a sense of superiority over them.

In his explanation to Behindwoods, Shivan stated, “He [the organiser] actually said, ‘We’re not normal people; we are influencers.’ It was meant to guide the attendees on how to conduct themselves, as they were not just ordinary people but influencers.” This clarification points to a potential misinterpretation of the original message, which Shivan alleges was twisted for viral effect.

Reactions and Backlash from Influencers

The remarks made during the event sparked backlash not just among the attendees but also on social media platforms. Influencers expressed their discontent regarding the implication that they held lesser status. Shivan noted that those who shared the video altered the original phrasing from “we are” to “they are,” which he believes distorted the narrative for increased engagement online.

According to Shivan, the individual behind the video later requested to keep it online due to the traction it was receiving, despite the controversy it stirred. This indicates a growing issue in the influencer space, where sensational content can overshadow the truth, leading to miscommunication and misunderstandings.

The controversy has not seemed to impact the performance of Shivan’s latest film, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK), which has been drawing audiences to theatres. The film’s narrative explores the intricacies of love in a technology-driven world, resonating with audiences amid ongoing discussions about relationships in modern society.

Box Office Performance of ‘Love Insurance Kompany’

Despite mixed reviews, Love Insurance Kompany has reportedly earned close to Rs 32 crore within its first six days of release in India. The film features prominent actors such as Pradeep Ranganathan and Krithi Shetty in leading roles and includes a supporting cast of well-known figures like SJ Suryah, Gouri Kishan, and Yogi Babu.

The story centres on a man’s quest for love in an era where relationships are often viewed through a transactional and technological lens. This theme seems to have struck a chord with audiences, contributing to its box office success.

The film’s production team is notable as well, with music composed by Anirudh, who has collaborated with Vignesh Shivan previously. The technical crew includes Ravi Varman as the director of photography and Pradeep E Ragav as the editor, ensuring a polished final product that complements the film’s narrative.
