Uttarakhand to Host 100 Miles Himalayan Endurance Ultra Run in May 2027

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttarakhand is set to enhance its reputation as a premier adventure tourism destination with the announcement of the ‘100 Miles Himalayan Endurance Ultra Run.’ Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami made this declaration during the Adi Kailash Parikrama Run 2.0, which took place on Sunday in Gunji, a remote area within the Pithoragarh district. The ultra run is scheduled for the first week of May next year and will commence at Mana Pass, situated at an altitude of approximately 5,600 metres.

The race will traverse notable locations including Badrinath and Joshimath before concluding at Auli. During the event, the Chief Minister recognised the achievements of participants in the 70-km and 42-km races, commending runners from various states across India for their remarkable endurance and spirit.

Dhami remarked that competing in such challenging conditions, characterised by extreme weather and low oxygen levels, requires exceptional courage and determination. He emphasised the significance of these events in promoting the region’s adventure tourism potential.

Promoting Uttarakhand’s Border Regions

According to Chief Minister Dhami, the Adi Kailash Parikrama Run serves as a vital platform to highlight the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Uttarakhand’s border regions. He noted that over 700 runners participated in the inaugural event in 2025, which has helped to bring attention to the adventure tourism capabilities of the Adi Kailash area.

Furthermore, Dhami indicated that the number of Inner Line Permits issued for the Adi Kailash region has significantly increased from the previous year, reflecting a growing interest among tourists and pilgrims. This surge in tourism is expected to contribute positively to local economies.

The 100 Miles Himalayan Endurance Ultra Run aims to further elevate long-distance running in Uttarakhand’s high-altitude terrain. The planned route will allow both domestic and international runners to experience the unique geography and breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayas.

Impact on Local Economies and Employment

Chief Minister Dhami highlighted the potential of tourism to bolster local economies and address migration issues in Uttarakhand’s border areas. Events like the Adi Kailash Parikrama Run create economic opportunities for various sectors, including homestays, local guiding services, transport providers, hotels, and food businesses.

The government is committed to ensuring that the benefits of tourism extend to local communities, fostering sustainable livelihoods. Dhami mentioned that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, there is a shift in perspective regarding border villages, recognising them as vital components of the nation.

In alignment with the Vibrant Villages Programme, initiatives are underway to enhance infrastructure, promote tourism, and expand livelihood opportunities in these strategically important areas. This approach aims to create a more sustainable future for the region’s inhabitants.

Expanding Adventure Tourism in Uttarakhand

Dhami stated that the state government is actively promoting a variety of adventure activities, including trekking, mountaineering, river rafting, kayaking, paragliding, mountain biking, and angling. An ultra-running event was successfully conducted in the Niti Valley earlier this year, and efforts are being made to broaden adventure tourism across several destinations, such as Auli, Munsiyari, Rishikesh, and Tehri.

Uttarakhand’s unique Himalayan geography, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage provide a distinctive advantage for adventure tourism. The government aims to harness this potential to stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and support sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

Upon his arrival in Gunji, Chief Minister Dhami received a traditional welcome from members of the Rang community, showcasing the region’s cultural heritage. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and Sashastra Seema Bal in facilitating the event, highlighting their role in safeguarding national borders and supporting community initiatives.
