US Captures Third Oil Tanker Linked to Venezuela Amid Oil Growth Claims

The CSR Journal Magazine

President Donald Trump stated that the United States has acquired over 80 million barrels of oil from Venezuela. This announcement coincided with the Pentagon’s confirmation of the seizure of a third oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, believed to have departed Venezuelan waters. During a State of the Union address held in Washington, DC, Trump emphasized the increasing production of American oil, which, according to him, has risen by more than 600,000 barrels per day. He reiterated his commitment to expanding oil drilling across the nation.

Context of the Recent Seizure and Oil Industry Developments

This surge in oil production and the recent capture of tankers come on the heels of a politically charged raid conducted by US special forces in Caracas, where opposition leader Nicolas Maduro was captured. Maduro has previously criticized US intervention, suggesting it serves as a justification for the seizure of Venezuelan oil reserves. In the aftermath of these events, the Trump administration has expressed intentions to facilitate US oil companies’ access to Venezuela’s oil market. Major firms such as Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and ConocoPhillips participated in discussions regarding the country’s oil resources shortly after Maduro’s abduction.

Pentagon’s Confirmation of Captured Tankers

Earlier on the same day, the Pentagon announced that US forces had boarded another oil tanker linked to Venezuela in the Indian Ocean. The Department of Defense revealed that all three vessels associated with this operation had been seized. A video release showcased US troops deploying from helicopters to board the tanker. While the specific origin of the captured vessel, identified as Bertha, was not disclosed, it was confirmed that the tanker had been tracked from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean.

Details About the Captured Vessel Bertha

Industry experts indicated that Bertha was carrying approximately 1.9 million barrels of Merey 16 crude, a type of Venezuelan crude oil. Following the seizure of Maduro, Bertha was among the 16 tankers that fled from the Venezuelan coast, as noted by Samir Madani, cofounder of TankerTrackers.com. Initially flagged to the Cook Islands under US sanctions, the tanker has more recently been registered under a false flag from Curacao and is reportedly operated by a Chinese company, according to maritime tracking sources.

Broader Implications of US Oil Policies

The recent developments in both the Venezuelan oil sector and US oil policies have ignited discussions about fossil fuel dependence. As the Trump administration pushes for increased oil extraction, including in sensitive areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, various Caribbean nations have been advocating for a transition towards renewable energy sources. These countries are contending with increasingly severe weather patterns exacerbated by climate change, which has intensified calls for sustainable practices in energy consumption.
