RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent visit to the ISKCON temple in New York marks a significant event during his ongoing tour of the United States. On Friday, Bhagwat participated in a food distribution initiative aimed at aiding homeless individuals, emphasising the importance of service within the community. This temple, located at 26 2nd Avenue, is notably where ISKCON was established by Srila Prabhupada in 1966.

During this visit, Bhagwat offered a garland to the founder, honouring his contributions while inaugurating the distribution of the 100,000th meal as part of the Zero Hunger New York initiative. Gauranga Das, the ISKCON Governing Body Commissioner, took to social media platform X to highlight Bhagwat’s presence as a historic moment for the organisation.

Gauranga Das elaborated on ISKCON’s extensive global reach, stating that the organisation now operates around 1,300 temples across 120 countries. He attributed the global dissemination of Hindu Sanatana Dharma to Srila Prabhupada, who played a pivotal role in spreading these teachings worldwide.

Shared Goals for Global Harmony

During the visit, Bhagwat engaged in discussions with ISKCON representatives about potential collaborations between the RSS and ISKCON aimed at fostering peace and harmony globally. The alignment of their missions reflects a broader intention to promote values that transcend cultural and national boundaries.

Anuttama Dasa, ISKCON’s Minister of Communications, expressed enthusiasm regarding Bhagwat’s visit, underscoring the organisation’s commitment to promoting both God consciousness and Krishna consciousness throughout the globe. In a world increasingly marked by conflicts and divisions, Dasa emphasised the urgency of these teachings. He stated that Bhagwat’s contributions would be invaluable in this endeavour.

Bhagwat’s comments during his address to the devotees highlighted the unifying potential of consciousness amid global strife. He remarked that “the only thing that unites is consciousness,” identifying Krishna consciousness as a vital force capable of bridging divides. His statement underscores the principles of tolerance and understanding central to ISKCON’s teachings.

Upcoming Address to the Indian Diaspora

Bhagwat’s visit to the ISKCON temple in New York precedes his much-anticipated address to the Indian diaspora at Madison Square Garden scheduled for August 29. This event is part of the Universal Oneness Celebration, which forms a key aspect of the RSS’s centenary-year celebrations.

His arrival in New York took place on Tuesday, marking the beginning of an extensive three-nation outreach tour that also includes stops in Canada and the United Kingdom. The tour aims to connect with various communities and promote the values represented by the RSS.
