UP Government Bans Cough Syrup After Deaths in MP

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Drugs Department of the Uttar Pradesh government has sealed Coldrif cough syrup containers after 10 children, as discovered during a raid in an Ayush firm in Chhindwara.

On Sunday, the state’s Assistant Commissioner of Drug Administration issued instructions to all drug inspectors to collect samples of the cough syrup manufactured by Shri Sun Pharmaceuticals in Chhindwara, after reports of severe side effects resulted in the death of 14 children in Madhya Pradesh. All the samples collected from both government and private institutes across Uttar Pradesh will be sent to a laboratory in Lucknow for testing.

The Sunday order also prohibits the import and export of cough syrup in government and private institutes until further notice. The authorities have emphasized strict compliance with instructions for the security and safety of the people. Officials told national media that action is being taken as a precautionary measure to prevent any adverse effects and to ensure the safety of the people.

Madhya Pradesh Deaths

The same cough syrup killed several children in Madhya Pradesh, after which a government doctor was arrested, with the police lodging a case against him and the Tamil Nadu-based manufacturers of the cough syrup. The Madhya Pradesh police also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, along with suspending Dr. Praveen Soni, who was a paediatric specialist at the Civil Hospital in Chhindwara district of Parasia subdivision. The doctor has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 105 and 276, and Section 27(8) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

The death toll in the state has reached 14.

Chhindwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Pandey told national media that the doctor was taken into custody on Sunday night after an FIR was lodged against him and Shri Sun Pharmaceuticals, which is a Tamil Nadu Kanchipuram-based firm.

“The SIT, led by an Additional Superintendent of Police, will soon visit Tamil Nadu and other locations linked to the case. We have also written to the Tamil Nadu police for assistance in the investigation… We are also questioning the doctor on how many patients he prescribed the syrup to,” said SP Pandey.
