University of Delhi Permits 11 Colleges to Admit Students Using Class 12 Marks

The CSR Journal Magazine

The University of Delhi has announced that 11 of its colleges will be allowed to admit undergraduate students for the academic year 2026–27 based on Class 12 marks, as opposed to scores from the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET-UG). This decision is primarily aimed at addressing the issue of vacant seats within these institutions. Admissions will be determined on merit, requiring candidates to meet the specific eligibility criteria for their chosen programmes.

It is important to note that this change does not signify a complete shift from CUET-UG. The alternative admission pathway will only apply to the specified colleges and courses noted in the university’s official communication and will be available only to candidates who have not yet secured admission to any other DU college.

Colleges Approved for Class 12 Marks Admissions

The following institutions are included in the list approved for admitting students based on Class 12 marks: Kalindi College, Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening), Lakshmibai College, Rajdhani College, Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women, P.G.D.A.V. (Evening), Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, Vivekanand College, Shyam Lal College, Aditi Mahavidyalaya, and Bhagini Nivedita College. These institutions offer a variety of undergraduate programmes.

The programmes available under this admission route encompass a range of courses, including BA (Hons) in disciplines such as Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian, Urdu, Punjabi, Geography, History, Political Science, Hindi Journalism, and Social Work. Furthermore, BSc (Hons) offerings in Physics, Mathematics, and Home Science are included, along with Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and BCom (Hons) degrees.

Additionally, several combinations for the BA Programme feature subjects like History, Political Science, Sanskrit, Hindi, Economics, Mathematics, Geography, Music, Philosophy, Sociology, Community Science, Computer Applications, Psychology, and Education. The notice also extends to include BSc programmes in Physical Science that pair with Chemistry or Electronics, Applied Physical Sciences with Industrial Chemistry, and Physical Science alongside Computer Science or Informatics Practices.

Context of the Change in Admission Process

The University of Delhi has conducted admissions through CUET-UG since its introduction in 2022. Prior to this, the colleges primarily relied on Class 12 marks and institution-specific cut-off scores to select students. This previous approach encountered criticism due to excessively high marks and variations in evaluation standards across different boards, complicating fair comparisons.

To mitigate these challenges, CUET was introduced with the aim of establishing a uniform foundation for admissions across various educational boards in India. The recent decision to revert, albeit partially, to Class 12 merit marks represents a limited deviation from the established CUET system rather than a complete reversion to the earlier admission methods. This reflects the university’s ongoing efforts to find a balance between merit-based admissions and standardised testing.

The University maintains that this new approach is a temporary measure to fill unoccupied seats while upholding the importance of merit in the admission process. Stakeholders within the education sector are closely monitoring this development as it may influence future trends in university admissions and the ongoing discourse regarding evaluation practices.
