The Delhi government is set to enhance hostel facilities for 10,000 students as part of a newly drafted policy focused on student accommodation. This initiative was announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday and is a response to the increasing demand for state-supported housing for students entering the city annually. Various meetings with relevant departments have already taken place, and potential locations for the hostels have been identified, according to CM Gupta.

Gupta emphasised that these facilities will cater to both male and female students, allowing enrolment from any college or university located in Delhi. In a video shared via her X handle, she expressed the intention to create hostels where parents can feel assured about their children’s safety, enabling students to focus on their academic goals without anxiety.

She articulated the significance of meeting the demand for hostel accommodation if Delhi aims to strengthen its position as a leading educational hub in India. Every year, lakhs of students come to Delhi for higher education opportunities, yet many face a shortage of adequate housing options.

Response to Recent Tragedy

This initiative is initiated in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred in Satya Niketan, where a five-storey paying guest accommodation collapsed, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including five students. The disaster has cast a spotlight on the inadequacies of the current hostel infrastructure in Delhi, leaving many students to seek private paying guest arrangements that may be costly and lack sufficient amenities.

Due to such tragedies, the issue of inadequate lodging for students has attracted significant attention from both the media and the public. The high rents and poor living conditions associated with many private accommodations have raised questions about the feasibility of securing safe housing for students, making this government initiative all the more pertinent.

CM Gupta reaffirmed that the government’s decision is driven by a commitment to ensure the safety and security of students, along with the provision of economical accommodation options in the context of rising living costs in Delhi.

Committee Establishment for Hostel Policy

In response to the collapse in Satya Niketan, a high-level meeting was convened, headed by Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, with the Delhi Chief Minister also in attendance. The meeting resulted in the establishment of a committee that will be chaired by Education Minister Ashish Sood to formulate an effective policy regarding student accommodation. This committee, consisting of 18 members, has been approved by the lieutenant governor and tasked with analysing the existing demand-supply gap for student housing.

The committee’s responsibilities also encompass ensuring the availability of land suitable for hostel construction. The lieutenant governor has instructed officials to investigate potential utilisation of vacant government-owned land and buildings to address the accommodation crisis. This strategic approach aims to streamline the development of hostels while ensuring that the necessary infrastructure meets the growing needs of students in Delhi.

Ultimately, the Delhi government’s ambition is to develop hostel capacity for 10,000 students, which would not only address immediate housing challenges but also contribute to a broader policy framework aimed at enhancing the overall quality of accommodation for students throughout the city.
