The CSR Journal Magazine

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s visit to India is scheduled for August 26 to 28. This trip aims to strengthen cooperation between the United Nations and India, particularly in the area of sustainable development. During her stay, Mohammed is expected to engage with senior government officials in New Delhi and interact with students at the Indian Institute of Technology.

The visit is a part of her travel back to New York following engagements in China and Mongolia. These trips are integral to broader UN efforts centred around topics such as artificial intelligence, human development, and land restoration. Mohammed’s itinerary reflects UN’s commitment to advancing global goals on sustainability through collaboration with different nations.

Meetings and Engagements

According to a statement from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the discussions in New Delhi will focus on enhancing UN-India cooperation while exploring India’s crucial role in promoting sustainable development. The meetings are expected to cover various topics linked to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to address multiple global challenges.

In addition to meetings with officials, Mohammed will also engage with students at the Indian Institute of Technology. This interaction aims to explore the potential of digital innovation in supporting sustainable development efforts. The UN regards such exchanges as vital for leveraging local expertise and fostering innovative solutions.

Before her visit to India, Mohammed will be in China to participate in the third dialogue on Artificial Intelligence and Human Development on August 24 and 25. This meeting is part of a series designed to bring together influential thinkers to discuss the impact of transformative technologies on human progress.

Context of the Visit

On August 23, Mohammed will be in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to represent the Secretary-General at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, also known as UNCCD COP17. This conference will address pressing issues such as land degradation, desertification, and the necessity for land restoration, highlighting the urgent need for resilience-building initiatives against these challenges.

In her previous visit to India in July 2023, which marked her first since taking office for a second five-year term in January 2022, she met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During that trip, she also travelled to Bengaluru, where she interacted with experts and industry leaders to discuss India’s advancements in digital technology.

Overall, Mohammed’s upcoming visit to India is expected to play a significant role in reinforcing partnerships for sustainable development while also serving as a bridge to her engagements in both China and Mongolia. The visit underscores the UN’s commitment to promoting collaboration among nations to tackle global challenges effectively.
