Ukraine to Seek US Assistance for Easter Ceasefire Proposal to Russia

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to engage US mediators in conveying an offer for a ceasefire during the upcoming Easter celebrations. This announcement came as he took part in events commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Bucha massacre, which occurred in March 2022. The proposal aims to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid ongoing challenges in peace negotiations.

Details of the Proposed Ceasefire

During a press statement, Zelenskyy confirmed his intention to discuss the ceasefire with US officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in scheduled online talks. He expressed a commitment to request that they relay this offer to Russian representatives. “We are prepared for a ceasefire during the Easter holidays,” he noted, highlighting Ukraine’s readiness for compromises, but firmly stating that these compromises would not extend to issues of national dignity or sovereignty.

The reaction from Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was cautious, indicating that Zelenskyy’s previous statements lacked any solid proposals for a ceasefire. Peskov emphasized the need for Ukraine to take necessary steps to foster genuine peace rather than merely calling for a ceasefire.

Signals from Allies Regarding Military Actions

Zelenskyy also reported receiving indications from several allies about potential reductions in Ukraine’s long-range attacks against Russian oil infrastructure, attributing this to rising global energy prices. He mentioned that Ukraine would reciprocate if Russia halted its assaults on the Ukrainian energy system.

Diplomats from various European nations visited Kyiv recently to commemorate the Bucha massacre’s anniversary and reiterate their backing for Ukraine following Hungary’s blocking of a significant 90 billion euro loan. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, along with representatives from Germany, Poland, Italy, and other EU countries participated in the memorial event, reflecting ongoing support for Ukraine amid its military struggles.

Ukrainian officials have engaged in multiple high-level trilateral discussions with US and Russian counterparts this year, with venues located in Abu Dhabi and Geneva. The scheduled fourth round of talks was postponed due to complications associated with the conflict involving Iran, with no advancements made in addressing the contentious territorial issues in eastern Ukraine.

Territory and Future Negotiations

Russia continues to assert its demands for Ukraine to surrender a portion of the eastern Donbas region, a request Zelenskyy has staunchly resisted. He noted that Russia asserted it could capture the remaining territories in Donbas within a two-month timeframe, aiming to conclude negotiations before the upcoming mid-term congressional elections in the United States.

In the face of Russian advances, the Ukrainian government remains determined to protect its remaining strongholds in the Donbas. Zelenskyy pointed to the slow progress of Russian military efforts since 2023, attributing the challenges to a strengthened Ukrainian defensive capability bolstered by advanced drone technology.
