Two people have been arrested for selling guns in Jalangi, near Bangladesh border in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The duo was held on July 19 from Kirtaniapara in Jalangi.

The two arrested are Biswajit Barman and Shambhu Barman, both residents of Bhelakopa Part-1 area of Tufanganj police station in Cooch Behar. Police have recovered two pipe guns and three rounds of live ammunition from them. The police are investigating who is the buyer of these weapons.

Cross-border arms smuggling increasing

Incidents of cross-border smuggling have increased in Murshidabad in recent times. It is not yet clear whether these guns were bought by smugglers from across the border or whether these guns were also smuggled.

How was the duo caught?

As per police, Biswajit and Shambhu had come from North Bengal by car to Jalangi. After receiving a tip-off from a secret source, police were conducting a raid in Jalangi’s Kirtaniapara. After spotting the car, the police stopped it and questioned the passengers. At that time, the police observed inconsistencies in their statements. After their bags were searched, guns and bullets were recovered and the two were arrested.

Police have registered a case against the arrested persons on charges of illegal possession of firearms and have started investigating the incident. The two arms dealers were produced before a court in Berhampore on Sunday.
