The remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, have drawn significant criticism from various political figures, including Americai Narayanan, spokesperson for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Narayanan referred to Stalin as “vulgar nidhi,” a term coined by the women and citizens of Tamil Nadu, in response to comments he made about Chief Minister Vijay and the actor Trisha.

During an interview with ANI, Narayanan condemned Stalin for allegedly exploiting a platform meant for farmers to make inappropriate comments about women. He expressed disappointment that, as the Leader of the Opposition, Stalin could not focus on serious governance issues during the Cauvery protest but instead opted to speak disparagingly about women.

According to Narayanan, an expectation was set for a constructive discussion from Stalin, but his comments were deemed shameful. This situation has resonated deeply among the women and populace of Tamil Nadu, leading to the new moniker for Stalin.

Political Leaders Demand Accountability

Prominent voices from other political parties also expressed discontent regarding Stalin’s statements. Congress MP Jothimani was particularly vocal, urging Stalin to refrain from involving women in political discourses. She emphasised that women across the nation are unwilling to accept such treatment and highlighted the importance of respect in political discussions.

Jothimani mentioned observing a video wherein a woman was objectified during Stalin’s speech. She inferred that Stalin should have intervened when party workers made troubling remarks. Her surprise was evident, considering Stalin’s reputation as a follower of the social reformer Periyar, advocating for women’s rights.

The growing sentiment against Stalin’s comments indicates a broader issue of respect towards women in political settings, which has generated significant backlash among citizens advocating for gender sensitivity.

Legal Proceedings and Investigations Underway

In a separate development, the Madras High Court has instructed the Tamil Nadu Police to release the DMK MLA after he was interrogated regarding his remarks related to Trisha. The court required him to cooperate with ongoing investigations as needed.

On August 4, 2023, the Thanjavur (East) Police took Stalin into custody from his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, for questioning. This was in connection with an FIR that arose following his public address at a protest over the Cauvery water dispute. He faces multiple charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, and the Information Technology Act.

The controversy escalated during the Cauvery protest when sections of the crowd began chanting the name “Trisha.” Stalin allegedly responded by stating, “Whether the water reaches anywhere else or not, it should reach there,” before clarifying he was only discussing the water issue. Following this event, the women’s wing of the TVK filed a complaint with the Thanjavur Police, accusing Stalin of making a suggestive comment targeting the actress.

Despite the backlash, the DMK has defended Stalin’s statements, asserting that they were misinterpreted and directed towards the government’s actions rather than aimed at any individual.
