TVK opens first Bengal office, signals social outreach before politics

The CSR Journal Magazine

Marking its first formal step outside Tamil Nadu, the party led by actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay—Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)—has inaugurated its maiden office in West Bengal at Fagupur in East Bardhaman district.

The office, located near Renaissance Township, was inaugurated on Sunday in the presence of the party’s West Bengal state coordinator Chaitali Roy and leaders from multiple districts. Party sources described the move as the formal beginning of TVK’s organisational activities in the state.

At this stage, TVK has made it clear that electoral politics is not its immediate priority in Bengal. Instead, the party aims to build grassroots connections through social service initiatives.

State leaders emphasised that the organisation’s current approach is to reach out to people, understand their concerns, and stand by them in times of need. According to Roy, the strategy follows directives from the party’s central leadership in Tamil Nadu, which prioritise public engagement over political confrontation in new regions.

Building trust at the grassroots

“Simply opening offices or enrolling members is not enough to strengthen an organisation,” Roy said, stressing the importance of direct engagement with citizens. The party intends to build trust by participating in welfare activities, listening to public grievances, and offering support to families in distress.

TVK leaders believe that winning public confidence in Bengal requires consistent presence during both good times and hardships.

Activities already underway

Party officials claim that social outreach efforts in Bengal began nearly two months ago. Initiatives have already been undertaken in several districts, including Malda, where a wheelchair distribution programme was recently organised.

Membership, they say, is gradually expanding, with individuals from Birbhum, Murshidabad, Howrah, Kolkata, and other districts joining the organisation.

The Fagupur office is not being viewed merely as a symbolic headquarters. Instead, it is intended to function as a coordination hub—bringing together supporters of Vijay from different districts and mobilising them for social work.

The party plans to expand its presence district by district, beginning with Bardhaman as a base.

Future political plans uncertain

While speculation persists about TVK’s electoral ambitions in Bengal, the leadership has kept its stance cautious. Any decision to contest elections will depend on the response from the people and directives from the central leadership.

Party insiders hinted that if organisational strength grows at the grassroots level, Vijay himself could visit Bengal in the future.

For now, TVK’s roadmap in Bengal is clear—prioritise public outreach over political contest. By focusing on welfare initiatives and community engagement, the party hopes to gradually establish its presence before making any electoral moves.

The message from the leadership is straightforward: reach the people first, and politics can follow later.
