In a virtual appearance during the 250th US Independence Day celebration at the US Embassy in New Delhi, US President Donald Trump expressed his unwavering support for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that India could count on him “100 per cent,” emphasising his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. The event was notable for its backdrop of increasing cooperation between India and the United States in various sectors including trade, defence, and the Quad partnership.

During the live interaction, Trump reiterated his admiration for PM Modi, stating, “I love India,” and hailed the Prime Minister as a “great” friend. The US leader’s remarks aimed to bolster diplomatic ties while underlining the importance of the relationship between both nations.

Trump’s emphasis on the strength of the economy, including a record stock market, further highlighted his intention to foster investment and trade links with India. His expression of admiration for Modi was a central theme of his address.

Recognition of Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Trump’s virtual address also included accolades for US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in India to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. He called Rubio “the greatest” and mentioned that he would be remembered as one of the most distinguished Secretaries of State in American history. This visit by Rubio is significant as it occurs during a crucial diplomatic initiative with India and other nations involved in the Quad security dialogue, namely, Japan and Australia.

The discussions within the Quad framework have gained importance amidst the rising influence of China in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue has increasingly turned into a vital forum for addressing issues related to regional security and maritime cooperation.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also participated in the event, which merged cultural performances with important diplomatic discussions, signalling the deepening ties between India and the US.

A New Era of Cooperation Highlighted

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor underscored the personal rapport between Trump and Modi, asserting that their friendship was a cornerstone of the robust bilateral ties. He remarked that in every discussion with Trump, the President often inquires after Modi, reflecting the significance of their relationship.

Gor described the current period as one of “a new era of shared success,” driven by growing investment and strategic cooperation. He remarked that the partnership was routinely evolving, with tangible advancements being made in various sectors.

One of the focal points of optimism expressed during the event was an anticipated interim trade agreement between India and the US. Gor indicated that a preliminary framework for the deal had already been established, and he suggested a potential signing could occur within weeks.

Gor noted that since his arrival in New Delhi five months prior, there has been significant progress towards the interim trade agreement, which underscores the collaborative spirit between both countries. The bilateral engagement is seen as a vital element in enhancing bilateral relations and ensuring mutual economic growth.
