In preparation for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is poised to initiate a major organisational reshuffle aimed at revamping its grassroots structure and strengthening its grip in politically critical regions. The move comes in the wake of introspection following the party’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
An internal action plan has been finalised to identify and restructure the party units in areas where it fell short during the parliamentary polls. Despite winning 29 Lok Sabha seats, TMC leaders, including party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, have expressed dissatisfaction over lapses within the party ranks and called for corrective action.
Reshuffle Based on Performance
Party insiders have confirmed that the much-anticipated reshuffle, previously delayed for several months, is now imminent. Changes are expected at multiple levels, particularly among district and block presidents. The restructuring will be strictly performance-based, sources said, and aimed at plugging organisational weaknesses exposed during the 2024 electoral exercise.
Speaking at a party workshop held at Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium on February 27, Abhishek Banerjee had made it clear that the reshuffle was “inevitable.” The TMC national general secretary has already reviewed the party’s poll performance at various levels and submitted a list recommending changes in the leadership structure in underperforming areas.
In a recent virtual meeting with party leaders, he reiterated the importance of internal reform, noting specific organisational shortcomings and stressing the need for a revamped approach ahead of the Assembly polls.
Cleansing the Ranks
In line with its electoral preparations, TMC has also conducted a detailed survey to evaluate the performance of local leaders, focusing on both administrative efficiency and public outreach. “The organisational reshuffle will take place. Those who are working for the party need not worry. A leader’s efficiency will be judged by their results,” Abhishek Banerjee said during a recent media interaction in Diamond Harbour.
Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee have repeatedly warned party members that corruption and anti-party activities will not be tolerated. The forthcoming reshuffle is being seen as part of a larger “cleansing” initiative to ensure discipline and accountability within the party.
As TMC gears up to defend its mandate in 2026, the organisational reset is expected to play a critical role in mobilising the cadre and consolidating support across the state.
