Trawler with 15 Indian Fishermen Missing in Bay of Bengal, Search Operation On

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Indian fishing trawler, identified as “Maa Kali,” has reportedly gone missing in the Bay of Bengal while carrying a crew of 15 fishermen. The crew embarked on a fishing expedition on July 2 from the Shankarpur Fishing Harbour, situated in West Bengal. It has been indicated that inclement weather conditions, including turbulent seas and significant waves attributed to a low-pressure system, may have contributed to their loss of communication with the shore.

Among the missing, three fishermen hail from the Baleshwar district of Odisha, specifically Rabindra Majhi, Jagannath Majhi, and Jayaram Majhi. The remaining 12 crew members are residents of West Bengal. The disappearance of the vessel prompted immediate action from local fishing organisations, which alerted the marine police to initiate search and rescue efforts.

As the situation developed, various local officials including marine police and district officials were informed about the incident. The local fishing community has expressed deep concern as the hours pass without any sign of the trawler or its crew.

Local Associations Call for Expanded Rescue Efforts

Swadesh Nayak, Secretary of the Shankarpur Fishermen and Fish Trawlers Association, has publicly appealed to local authorities to intensify the rescue operations. Speaking to reporters, Nayak outlined the urgent need for a comprehensive search effort, requesting the deployment of the Navy and aerial support in the form of helicopters to aid in locating the missing individuals.

Nayak further discussed the emotional toll the incident has taken on the families of the missing fishermen, emphasising their distress and anxiety. He stated, “The trawler ‘Maa Kali,’ which is registered with our association, went into the sea on July 2. Since that day, we have been unable to trace either the vessel or the crew.” The community’s urgency reflects a heartfelt plea for swift action from all levels of government.

In light of these developments, authorities have ramped up search efforts in hopes of a positive outcome. Local police agencies, including the Digha Coastal Police and Mandarmani Coastal Police, have been mobilised alongside community-led initiatives to address the situation as it unfolds.

No Official Confirmation on Crew’s Safety

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the safety of the fishermen aboard the “Maa Kali.” The lack of communication following the vessel’s last known location is a major concern for all stakeholders involved. Local representatives have reached out to MP Soumendu Adhikari and various police units, urging for coordinated efforts to bring back the missing crew members.

As the hours continue to pass, the anxiety among relatives grows more intense, underscoring the human aspect of this maritime incident. With rescue efforts ongoing, community members remain hopeful for a resolution, while holding onto the hope that their loved ones will return safely. This incident has highlighted the risks associated with deep-sea fishing, particularly in volatile weather conditions.

The ongoing search operation is crucial not only for the families awaiting news but also for ensuring the safety of local fishermen in future expeditions. Community support and solidarity in challenging times play a vital role in managing the circumstances surrounding this troubling event.
