In a very tragic incident a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was shot and injured. The incident occurred in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Tuesday night. The incident coincides with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s three-day visit to the Murshidabad region.
Meanwhile, the Police have arrested two suspects in connection to the incident. Following the attack the police also recovered a firearm and ammunition from the culprits.
TMC Worker Injured in Firing Incident
Trinamool Congress worker, Mawla Baksh Mandal, is identified as the victim. He sustained a bullet wound to his left hand. This comes after three assailants allegedly opened fire near his residence in Hariharpara.
According to the victim, two of the attackers were local Congress leaders, Rajesh Sk and Bobin Sk. Reports suggest that these two had a longstanding enmity with Mandal.
“I was sitting next to my house when three people came and opened fire. Two bullets were fired, one hit my left hand,” Mandal said. Following the attack Mandal was first taken to the Hariharpara Block Primary Health Centre. However, his condition worsened and he was shifted to Murshidabad Medical College Hospital.
Police Launches Probe
The incident has triggered widespread tension in the area. Police from Hariharpara police station swiftly reached the spot to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the two named accused, Rajesh Sk and Bobin Sk, were arrested. The police has also registered a formal complaint against both the involved culprits. An investigation into the alleged crime, the motive behind it, and circumstances of the attack is underway.
CM Mamata Banerjee Visits Riot-Hit Areas
Shockingly, the shooting incident occurred while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was on a visit in the area. She was stationed at the Baharampur Circuit House as part of her district visit.
Earlier in the day, Banerjee had toured violence-hit areas including Suti and Samserganj. The CM met with victims’ families affected by recent communal clashes in Murshidabad. The clashes occurred over the Waqf Amendment Act.
Following the incident, security forces were deployed throughout the region to maintain order and in the wake of her visit. “We will not spare those who tried to disturb peace in Bengal,” the Chief Minister assured victims’ families. The CM pledged strict action against those responsible for inciting unrest in the region.
Background of Communal Clashes in Murshidabad
The Murshidabad region has been on edge since last month’s violent protests against the Waqf Amendment Act. The clashes erupted in Samserganj, Suti, and Dhulian. The deadly violence claimed three lives and left several injured.
