TMC MP Kakali’s presence at Kalyani meet chaired by CM Adhikari sparks political speculation

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a development that has drawn significant political attention, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kakali Ghosh Dastidar was seen attending a high-level administrative meeting in Kalyani on Tuesday—an event presided over by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The meeting, convened to review administrative issues across North 24 Parganas, Nadia, and Hooghly districts, witnessed participation from leaders across party lines. Alongside BJP ministers and MLAs, several Trinamool legislators were also present, marking a notable shift from past practices.

Among those in attendance were BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul, who welcomed the Chief Minister at the venue. TMC MLAs, including Surajit Mitra from Basirhat South and representatives from Deganga and Swarupnagar, were also seen arriving at the meeting.

Kakali’s presence raises eyebrows

However, it was Kakali’s presence that stood out. Her attendance comes amid growing indications of internal dissent within the Trinamool Congress. Recently removed from her position as Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, she was replaced by Kalyan Banerjee following a decision by party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Soon after her removal, Kakali posted a cryptic message on social media, hinting at dissatisfaction after decades of political association with Mamata Banerjee. A long-time loyalist, her association with Mamata dates back to student politics in the 1970s.

Signs of internal rift deepen

In the weeks that followed, Kakali’s actions intensified speculation about internal discord within the party. She reportedly wrote to senior leader Subrata Bakshi and made indirect remarks about political consultancy firm I-PAC, along with occasional veiled criticisms of Mamata Banerjee.

The situation drew further attention after the Central Government upgraded her security cover, though no official explanation has been offered. Her appearance at a meeting chaired by Adhikari—once a prominent Trinamool leader himself—is being viewed by observers as politically significant.

Shift in administrative approach?

The meeting also reflects a broader shift in governance style. Unlike previous regimes, where opposition leaders were rarely invited to such administrative forums, the current administration appears to be taking a more inclusive approach.

According to TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee, opposition representatives are now being included in such discussions, although no official clarification was provided regarding invitations for this specific meeting.

Political implications under watch

Observers suggest that this inclusion of opposition voices could indicate a move toward a more participatory administrative model, potentially strengthening democratic processes at the district level.

Meanwhile, Kakali Ghosh Dastidar’s recent moves continue to be closely monitored, with growing speculation about her future trajectory within the party and the evolving political landscape of West Bengal.
