Eighteen Women Die Following Childbirth, Rajasthan Maternal Deaths Trigger Probe

The CSR Journal Magazine

Eighteen women have reportedly died after childbirth in Rajasthan since May, with concerns escalating following recent incidents. The state government has announced an extensive inquiry into the rising number of maternal fatalities across public hospitals, particularly in the Bhilwara and Banswara districts, where nine women died between July 5 and July 10.

The alarming cases are attributed to complications arising from caesarean deliveries. Five women died shortly after surgery at the maternity hospital in Bhilwara, where they had been admitted for treatment. Hospital records indicate they were moved to the intensive care unit due to post-operative complications before their deaths occurred.

This crisis follows earlier incidents, including five maternal deaths recorded in early May at a government facility in Kota, and subsequent cases in Bikaner where six women developed kidney failure after caesarean sections, with two fatalities reported. Currently, seven women remain on dialysis linked to these earlier cases.

Government Response and Expert Involvement

The minister has summoned senior officials, including hospital principals from the affected regions, for discussions on this troubling trend. Additionally, leading gynaecologists from across the state have been enlisted to conduct a thorough examination, similar to an earlier review carried out by a team from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi.

While laboratory results have been reported as normal, the minister underscored the need for a deeper understanding of the underlying causes. He mentioned that any actions against medical staff or officials would depend on the confirmation of negligence or specific errors in medical practices.
