The CSR Journal Magazine

Supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kolkata, specifically near Girish Park, which is located approximately 5 kilometers from the Brigade Parade Ground.

This incident occurred just 30 minutes before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to address a large gathering at the venue. Reports indicate that a police officer and a BJP leader sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Allegations of Stone-Throwing

Amid the unrest, there were claims that stones were thrown at the residence of Shashi Panja, a minister in the West Bengal government, situated in the Girish Park area. Eyewitness accounts suggest that members of both political parties engaged in stone-pelting while shouting slogans. The clash coincided with the culmination of the BJP’s state-wide ‘Parivartan Yatra,’ a campaign ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.

Claims from Both Sides

BJP supporters alleged that they were not provoked when the violence began, stating that they were simply heading towards the rally while chanting slogans in favor of Prime Minister Modi. “Stones were thrown at us without any provocation. They also abused us,” said a BJP activist during an interview with a local Bengali news channel. Additionally, the BJP contended that several vehicles were damaged during the altercation.

TMC’s Response to Allegations

Members of the TMC dismissed the BJP’s assertions, countering that it was the BJP supporters who initiated the violence by hurling insults before resorting to stone-throwing. They further claimed that stones were directed at the homes of TMC leaders amid the chaos.

Police Intervention

A significant police presence was dispatched to the scene in response to the escalating situation, and they managed to bring the unrest under control. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.

PM Modi’s Upcoming Plans

During his visit to West Bengal, Prime Minister Modi is anticipated to announce and lay the foundation stones for several development projects in the region, which are valued at over Rs 18,000 crore.
