A 24-year-old woman has alleged that she was gang-raped inside South Calcutta Law College on June 25 by three men, including a former student and two current ones. The incident has triggered intense political backlash after the main accused was identified as a local leader in the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) student wing.
In a complaint accessed by India Today, the woman said she was assaulted after refusing a marriage proposal from the primary accused, Monojit Mishra, 31, a practicing lawyer and former student of the college. She stated that Mishra, after facing rejection, threatened to harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases.
“They tried to force me with the intention of having sex,” she wrote. “I denied and fought back by not letting him do anything and pushing him back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But they did not agree.”
According to the complaint, she was confined, dragged to the guard room, undressed, and repeatedly raped.
“Forcefully Raped Me”: Victim of the Incident
“I touched his feet but he didn’t let me go… They again took me to the room… they took me to the guard room forcefully, undressed me and started forcefully raping me.”
She alleged that the assault was filmed and used to threaten her. “They recorded videos of mine when the accused was raping me. They threatened me to show these videos to everyone if I do not cooperate.”
She also claimed the men tried to attack her with a hockey stick when she attempted to leave. “I asked them to take me to hospital but they were not helping me. They had locked the main gate of the college and the guard was helpless and did not help.”
The survivor was reportedly allowed to leave the premises later that evening but only under the threat of further violence.
Sequence of Events and Police Action
The woman arrived at the college around noon to fill out exam-related forms. She was initially in the union room before being confined, according to the FIR. The crime reportedly took place between 7:30 PM and 10:50 pm on June 25.
Following her complaint at Kasba Police Station, the police arrested Monojit Mishra, as well as Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee (alias Pramit Mukhopadhyay), both current students. Mishra is currently the general secretary of the South Kolkata unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the TMC.
Mishra and Ahmed were detained on June 26 near Talbagan Crossing, while Mukherjee was arrested from his residence in the early hours of June 27. All three are in four-day police custody, and their phones have been seized for forensic analysis. Medical tests on the survivor have been conducted, and the crime scene is secured.
BJP Targets TMC, Demands Accountability
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seized on the case, alleging political shielding of the accused. Party leaders shared images appearing to show Mishra with senior TMC figures, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari stated: “Yet again Mamata Banerjee’s government is found standing with the accused! Accused No 1 Manojit Mishra is a TMC member. Whether it is the RG Kar rape and murder case, where Mamata Banerjee tried to silence the victim’s parents or now, when the accused is found to be a TMC member…”
He also accused the state of suppressing the survivor’s whereabouts.
“Why the silence? Who are they shielding? And where is the outrage from Mamata Banerjee or TMC…”
BJP’s IT Cell chief Amit Malviya wrote on X: “Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on June 25… The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded… and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, Bengal has become a nightmare for women…”
TMC Response and Broader Context
As of now, neither Mamata Banerjee nor the TMC has issued an official statement. However, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim commented briefly: “I will speak to the police and then address the media.”
The case draws parallels to the RG Kar Medical College incident, where a female doctor was raped and murdered by a civic volunteer. That case had led to public outcry, and BJP leaders continue to use it to highlight what they describe as deteriorating law and order in the state.
With investigations ongoing and the case gaining national attention, political tensions are expected to intensify in the run-up to the next election.
