Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Criticized for No. 3 Spot in T20I vs New Zealand

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s young cricketer, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, faced criticism after his performance batting at No. 3 during the second T20I against New Zealand on Sunday. Sooryavanshi, who had previously been benched for the T20I series against the West Indies and the series opener against New Zealand, stepped in for the injured Ishan Kishan in Christchurch. Unfortunately, he managed only four runs from eight balls, leading to questions about his batting position.

Former Indian spinner Murali Kartik expressed his views on the matter, suggesting that the management should have opted for Sanju Samson to take the No. 3 spot instead. During a post-match discussion on the Sony Sports Network, Kartik highlighted that Sooryavanshi, at just 15 years old, is more suited to an opening role rather than batting in the middle order.

Kartik stated, “I was repeatedly saying this, even before the match started. When you are playing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, where is he at his best? He is good as an opener. You have put him in the middle order, which he has not played before.” He emphasised the importance of experienced players taking on different roles in the batting order to support young talents.

Expert Opinions on Batting Order

At present, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are the designated openers in India’s T20I squad. However, Kartik argued that Sharma should not be expected to fill the No. 3 role, as both he and Sooryavanshi share similar batting styles that are more effective at the top of the order. In contrast, he described Samson as a more versatile player capable of adapting to various positions within the batting line-up.

Kartik elaborated, “Because Abhishek Sharma plays similarly, and you have Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who is also a similar player. Sanju Samson is a player who is a banker for you. He can play in different positions.” He acknowledged that while some may question Samson’s placement, experienced players often need to adjust their roles for the team’s benefit.

Furthermore, Kartik suggested that if Sooryavanshi were to be positioned in the middle order, the management should have considered selecting Shivam Dube as Kishan’s replacement. He argued that this would have been a more logical choice for the middle order, allowing Sooryavanshi to open the innings.

Future Implications for Team Selection

Kartik concluded his analysis by stating that the focus should be on optimising player performance. He reiterated that if Sooryavanshi was not included in the line-up, Dube could have been a viable option for the middle order. “It is about getting the best work out of everyone, and in that regard, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should have opened,” he remarked.

This situation has sparked discussions about the strategic decisions made by the team management, especially regarding the development of young players like Sooryavanshi. The upcoming matches will likely see further scrutiny of player placements and batting order decisions as the team aims for success in the series.

As the cricketing community continues to analyse the performance and strategies employed during the matches, the focus remains on how the team can best utilise its young talents while balancing the experience of senior players. The next T20I match is set for 27th October at 11:30 AM, where fans will be keen to see how the team adjusts its approach moving forward.
