Apple to Launch Touchscreen MacBook Pro at “Pro and Tell” Event on October 28

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is preparing to launch a new touchscreen MacBook Pro during its upcoming “Pro and Tell” event on Wednesday, October 28. This marks a significant shift for the MacBook Pro, which has traditionally lacked a touchscreen feature that its Windows counterparts have offered. Reports indicate that the touchscreen will serve as an additional input method rather than transforming the device into a touch-first model.

The integration of a touchscreen is expected to complement the existing keyboard and trackpad, which will remain central to user interaction. Users will reportedly be able to perform actions such as scrolling, pinching, panning, zooming, and swiping with the touchscreen. This enhancement aims to provide a more versatile user experience without compromising the traditional MacBook functionality.

To facilitate this new feature, Apple is likely to update macOS Golden Gate, optimising the user interface for touchscreen interactions. The software is anticipated to include a dynamic interface that adapts based on whether the user is interacting with the display or the trackpad. For instance, tapping a button may display a menu around the user’s finger, while the Dock and Menu Bar will be adjusted for touch usability.

Expected Display and Performance Enhancements

In addition to the touchscreen, the new MacBook Pro is rumoured to feature an OLED display, which would provide enhanced contrast and deeper blacks compared to the mini-LED screens currently in use. Furthermore, Apple may eliminate the notch from the MacBook Pro’s design, replacing it with a Dynamic Island, a feature already seen on iPhones.

The refreshed MacBook Pro is expected to be available in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, powered by Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These enhancements aim to elevate the performance and visual quality of the device, aligning it more closely with user expectations in a competitive market.

While the introduction of a touchscreen and OLED panel is promising, it is anticipated that these upgrades will result in a higher price point. Reports suggest that the new touchscreen MacBook Pro will be positioned above the existing high-end models, potentially costing significantly more than the current versions, which begin at Rs 2,99,900 for the M5 Max variant in India.

Launch Event Details and Future Plans

The “Pro and Tell” event will take place in Los Angeles at 10 am Pacific Time on October 28, which corresponds to 10:30 pm IST. Attendees are expected to have the opportunity to experience the new laptops firsthand following their official announcement through a press release.

The existing 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring mini-LED displays are likely to remain available for purchase after the new models are introduced. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with an M6 chip, maintaining the current design. This will create a tiered structure within the MacBook Pro line-up, featuring an entry-level 14-inch M6 model, the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max models, and the newly designed OLED touchscreen versions.

In the long term, Apple may consider merging its touchscreen and non-touch high-end MacBook Pro lines as production costs decrease. The company is also exploring OLED options for the MacBook Air and iMac, although these developments are not expected to materialise immediately. A new non-OLED iMac is anticipated to be announced this week, with a refreshed non-OLED MacBook Air set for release early next year.
