Hyundai Motor India has introduced the Bayon SUV at a starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), marking its entry into the mid-size SUV market. This model is the second offering from Hyundai in this segment, joining the well-established Creta. The company has commenced bookings for the Bayon through its official website and authorised dealerships, requiring an initial payment of Rs 11,000.

The Bayon is set to compete against other mid-size SUVs, including the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, as it aims to capture a share of this growing market segment. The introduction of the Bayon signifies Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its SUV portfolio and catering to the evolving preferences of Indian consumers.

Design and Features of the Bayon

The Hyundai Bayon features a contemporary design, measuring 4,245mm in length, 1,810mm in width, and boasting a wheelbase of 2,600mm. It offers a ground clearance of 205mm. The front of the SUV showcases a layered fascia with a split headlamp configuration, complemented by slim LED daytime running lights positioned along the bonnet’s edge. The main headlamp units are strategically placed lower in the bumper, enhancing the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal.

From the side, the Bayon exhibits pronounced wheel arches, sharp character lines, and petal-style alloy wheels. The blacked-out pillars create a floating-roof effect, while traditional pull-type door handles maintain a familiar design. At the rear, the vehicle features slim tail-lamps connected by a black trim section, along with prominent Bayon lettering on the tailgate. The SUV also provides a generous boot space of 505 litres.

Interior and Technological Innovations

Inside, the Bayon boasts a panoramic dashboard layout, equipped with two 12.3-inch displays—one serving as the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system. The vehicle includes Hyundai’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), powered by NVIDIA, which offers online navigation, split-screen functionality, and personalised controls.

The centre console is designed in a vertically oriented layout, while a dedicated dashboard panel houses the climate controls. The rear seats feature a two-step reclining function for enhanced comfort. A notable addition is Hyundai’s first-ever Generative AI Voice Assistant, which is capable of responding to various conversational requests related to travel and local attractions.

The Bayon also incorporates Hyundai Bluelink, which offers over 70 connected functions, including remote vehicle controls and location-based services. The infotainment system supports 10 regional languages and two international languages, featuring more than 500 embedded voice commands, enabling occupants to access numerous functions without an internet connection.

Performance and Safety Features

The Bayon is powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated MPi petrol engine that generates 115bhp and 144Nm of torque. It is available with a six-speed manual gearbox or Hyundai’s Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT), which is a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The iVT includes a Dash Boost Mode aimed at enhancing responsiveness during overtaking.

Hyundai has equipped the Bayon with a comprehensive safety suite, built on the Global K enhanced platform. This includes over 80 advanced safety features, with more than 35 available as standard across all variants. The safety package comprises six airbags, electronic stability control, and Hyundai SmartSense Level 2 Pro ADAS, which includes various driver assistance functions.

Additional safety features encompass Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, and a Surround View Monitor. Hyundai claims that the Bayon’s body structure utilises 69 per cent advanced multi-grade high-strength steel, designed to improve crash-energy management and occupant protection.
