Thalapathy Takes Over Tamil Nadu: Vijay to Take Oath as CM Today

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay is preparing to be inaugurated as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM. This event marks a significant change in the political landscape of the state, ending a dominance of over six decades by the Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK. Following a fractured mandate from the recent Assembly elections, in which Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured 108 seats while falling short of the 118-seat majority, the landscape has become more competitive.

The swearing-in ceremony will occur at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, making it a historic moment as it signals the first time since 1967 that Tamil Nadu will be governed by a party outside of the traditional DMK and AIADMK alliances. This outcome has been shaped by recent political alliances and consultations among various parties in the state.

On the day preceding the swearing-in, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan, formally requesting to form the government. This ceremony is culmination of a week of intense political negotiations following the Assembly elections results. Although TVK emerged as the single largest party, the support from other parties proved crucial for Vijay’s claim.

Alliances and Political Dynamics

Following the elections, the AIADMK, which secured 47 seats, was unexpectedly joined by AMMK, holding 1 seat, to assert a claim for government formation. AMMK has urged the Governor to invite AIADMK general secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami, to form the government, adding to the complexity of the emerging political alliances. Despite this, TVK turned to other parties for support, such as the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, each of which secured 2 seats. The Congress, which won 5 seats, has already pledged its assistance to Vijay.

Supporting Vijay, CPI State Secretary Veerapandian stated that assisting the largest party constitutes their “democratic duty”. He emphasised the importance of upholding a people’s democracy while announcing the collaboration with the other parties backing TVK. This unified front is aimed at ensuring that the political momentum shifts towards TVK following years of duopoly by the established Dravidian parties.

Vijay’s confidence about his impending oath was echoed by TVK MLA Marie Wilson, who expressed optimism that the decision would be announced late that night. CPI(M)’s national general secretary, MA Baby, reiterated the importance of this newly formed alliance, citing potential opportunistic maneuvers from other parties. They conveyed a commitment to uphold democratic principles in the face of pressures stemming from a larger political narrative.

Protests And Reactions Surrounding Swearing-In

As the political scenario unfolded, protests erupted across Tamil Nadu, targeting both the Governor and the central government led by the BJP. Demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction over the Governor’s previous request for confirmation of support for Vijay’s claim to leadership. Demonstrations took place in Chennai and Madurai, showcasing public discontent regarding the Governor’s perceived interference in the political processes.

Defending the Governor’s stance, AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan argued that the demand for proof of additional supporting MLAs was necessary, given TVK’s assertion of being the largest party. The political landscape has sparked both unrest among supporters of TVK and renewed discussions about forming stable governance in Tamil Nadu amidst growing uncertainties.

The political rift has implications beyond Tamil Nadu, leading to fractures within the broader INDIA bloc as Congress chose to support TVK, moving away from long-standing alliances. As the traditional political affiliations face challenges, the scene is set for a new chapter in Tamil Nadu under Vijay’s stewardship, who transitions from cinematic roles to political leadership.
