Telangana DCA Conducts Raid on Unlicensed Clinic in Hanumakonda, Illegal Medicines Seized

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) executed a raid on a clinic operated by an unlicensed medical practitioner in Shayampet village, Hanumakonda district, on February 21. This action was taken following credible information regarding illegal medical activities at the First Aid Clinic managed by Racharla Prabhakar, who allegedly lacks the necessary qualifications to provide medical treatment.

During the investigation, officials uncovered and seized 30 different types of medications, which included physician samples, institutional drugs, antibiotics, and steroids, as well as habit-forming drugs, such as Tramadol injections. The estimated value of the confiscated medications stands at Rs 35,000.

Health Risks Associated with Seized Medications

Health authorities expressed concerns regarding the discovery of several advanced-generation antibiotics in the clinic. Officials warned that the unregulated distribution and usage of antibiotics by individuals who lack medical training could have serious public health implications, potentially leading to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, the presence of steroids raised alarms, as their misuse can result in adverse health effects, including immune system suppression, hormonal imbalances, muscle weakness, and increased risk of cardiovascular issues and mental health disorders. Such risks pose significant threats to community wellness.

Operational Oversight and Future Actions

The operation was conducted by Drugs Inspector J Kiran Kumar from Hanumakonda and Drugs Inspector P Shravan Kumar from Warangal, under the supervision of Assistant Director Dr G Rajyalakshmi. The DCA has collected samples for further analysis and stated that a thorough investigation is ongoing. Those found in violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 will face appropriate legal action. According to the DCA, strict measures will be prioritized against individuals and organizations involved in illegal drug supply chains.

Regulatory Compliance and Public Reporting

In light of the recent events, the DCA has issued warnings to wholesalers and distributors supplying medications to unqualified practitioners or unlicensed shops without valid drug licenses. Such actions will result in stringent penalties under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Wholesalers are now mandated to ensure that all medicines are delivered only to entities holding valid licenses provided by appropriate authorities. Additionally, they must verify and maintain up-to-date records of these licenses to prevent any legal repercussions. Non-adherence to these regulations could lead to penalties including imprisonment of up to five years.

Public Engagement and Reporting Mechanism

The DCA has encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal drug handling, including the unauthorized manufacture of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Citizens can reach out via the DCA Telangana toll-free number 1800-599-6969, available between 10.30 am and 5 pm on weekdays. This initiative aims to bolster public health safety and ensure compliance with regulatory standards in the pharmaceutical sector.
