Israeli airstrikes conducted on a village in southern Lebanon have reportedly resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including a child, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. This attack occurred amid escalating tensions across the Middle East, highlighting an increasingly volatile situation in the region.

The airstrikes have provoked widespread condemnation and raised concerns about the safety of civilians in conflict zones. Eyewitnesses in the targeted village have described the chaos that ensued following the strikes, with local authorities struggling to respond to the urgent needs of the affected population.

As the situation in Lebanon deteriorates, various aid organisations are reportedly mobilising resources to assist those in need. However, obstacles in accessing the affected areas due to security concerns pose significant challenges for relief efforts.

Escalation of Conflict in Yemen

In Yemen, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for shooting down a Saudi military surveillance aircraft in the northern part of the country. Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree stated that the aircraft was on a mission to execute “hostile actions” when it was intercepted over Jawf province.

Additionally, the Houthis reported that they had downed three Saudi reconnaissance drones within the past 24 hours, which included one drone that was spotted early on Monday in Bayda province. The claim comes amid ongoing clashes between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government troops.

In response to these developments, Yemeni government forces announced on X that they conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi gatherings in Dahle province. These actions reportedly included 13 airstrikes on Houthi positions and missile launch sites in Bayda, as well as additional strikes in Marib province. The Houthi military did not respond to these allegations regarding the airstrikes.

Strait of Hormuz Tensions Increase

Amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to the President of the United Arab Emirates, made a statement asserting that “no single state” should have controlling authority over the Strait of Hormuz. His comments came at an international leaders’ forum in Abu Dhabi following Iran’s announcement of plans to declare a new “exclusion zone” in the waterway.

Gargash emphasised the need to protect energy exports and commercial activities, warning that Iran should face consequences for its actions, which threaten vessels in the strait. He expressed that using strategic waterways as tools of coercion is unacceptable, thereby highlighting the broader implications for global trade.

Furthermore, Gargash pointed out the long-term challenges of rebuilding trust between Iran and Gulf nations. He suggested that it may take decades to foster better diplomatic relations due to Tehran’s previous engagements with its neighbours. The UAE, which is a close ally of the United States, has faced recurrent missile and drone attacks attributed to Iranian forces during the ongoing conflict in the region.
