Stray Dog Mutilates Body in Telangana Hospital Mortuary, Sparks Outrage

The CSR Journal Magazine

A stray dog caused a distressing incident at a mortuary in a government-run hospital located in Mahabubnagar, Telangana, on Monday. The event, which involved the mutilation of a deceased individual’s body, has generated significant public outrage following the emergence of graphic videos related to the case on various social media platforms. This occurrence was reported at the Area Hospital in Jadcherla, raising urgent concerns regarding security protocols and infrastructure limitations within public healthcare settings.

Details of the Deceased and Circumstances Surrounding the Incident

The deceased individual has been identified as 32-year-old Pole Bhimeshwar, a resident of Jadcherla. Authorities revealed that he was found lifeless in a pond earlier that day, with circumstances surrounding his death deemed suspicious. His remains were subsequently transferred to the mortuary of the state-run facility for necessary post-mortem procedures.

Mortuary Condition and Security Lapse Identified

Reports indicated that the body was placed directly on the mortuary floor due to a malfunctioning freezer, as it could not be stored in the available unit because of swelling. Although the mortuary doors were secured by an attendant, a stray dog somehow managed to enter the premises. The ward boy later discovered the animal inside and attempted to remove it, but by that time, the stray had already reportedly mutilated a portion of the body.

Government Response and Inquiry Initiated

Following the incident, a video clip purportedly showcasing the distressing events circulated online, igniting public anger and demands for accountability. Telangana’s Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha expressed deep concern over the situation and instructed the State Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Commissioner, Ajay Kumar, to conduct an investigation. The commissioner visited the hospital the next day to engage with the bereaved family, law enforcement officials, medical personnel, and other witnesses while assessing the factors that contributed to this incident.

Administrative Actions Taken Against Officials

In response to the serious allegations of neglect stemming from the incident, the health minister took immediate administrative actions, suspending four officials due to their inadequate handling of the situation. Those suspended included the hospital superintendent, the Resident Medical Officer on duty, a medical officer, and a staff member responsible for the mortuary. A statement from the government emphasized its commitment to taking preventive measures to avert occurrences of this nature in the future.

Calls for Improved Hospital Oversight

Ajay Kumar assured that steps would be implemented to enhance security measures and improve the mortuary’s structural integrity. Local residents have since voiced their concerns, advocating for greater oversight and maintenance of government healthcare facilities. As the authorities gear up to submit a comprehensive inquiry report, lingering questions remain about how such a fundamental security oversight could result in a violation of dignity for the deceased.
