Singer Maithili Thakur Likely to Contest Bihar Assembly Polls 2025, Meets BJP Leaders Amid Speculation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Famous folk and classical singer Maithili Thakur is making headlines following her meeting with senior BJP leaders ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections 2025. The 25-year-old singer from Benipatti in Madhubani district recently met BJP’s Bihar election in-charge Vinod Tawde and Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in New Delhi, sparking speculation about her entry into electoral politics.

Photos from the meeting, shared by Tawde on social media platform X, referred to Maithili as “Bihar’s daughter” and hinted at her potential role in Bihar’s political future. Tawde mentioned that Thakur’s family had left Bihar in 1995 during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure, but she now wants to return, inspired by the state’s changing landscape.

Taking a dig at the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Tawde wrote, “The families that left Bihar after Lalu came into power in 1995, the daughter of that family, the renowned singer Maithili Thakur ji, wants to return to Bihar seeing the pace of changing Bihar.”

Maithili Responds to Speculations

Reacting to the growing buzz, Maithili Thakur neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of contesting the election. Speaking to News18, she said, “I too have been seeing these things on TV. I recently visited Bihar and had the opportunity to meet Nityanand Rai and Vinod Tawde. We had a discussion about Bihar’s future. No official announcement has been made at this time. But let’s see what happens.”

Expressing an emotional bond with her native place, she added, “I would like to stand from my village constituency because I have an attachment to it.”

Possible Seats: Alinagar or Madhubani

While no seat has been officially declared, political analysts speculate that the BJP may offer her a ticket from either the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga or her home seat Madhubani. Thakur has expressed her willingness to contest if given a chance, preferring to represent her own village in the Assembly.

Both Madhubani and Alinagar fall within the Mithila region, which holds cultural and emotional significance for Maithili, who has built her identity through performances that celebrate the region’s folk traditions.

Tawde’s Post Hints Political Comeback

In his X post, Vinod Tawde lauded Thakur’s return to Bihar and emphasized her potential contribution to the state’s progress. He wrote, “The family that left Bihar when Lalu Raj came to power in 1995, the daughter of that family, the renowned singer Maithili Thakur ji, wants to return to Bihar, seeing the pace of changing Bihar.”

“The family that left Bihar when Lalu Raj came to power in Bihar in the year 1995, the daughter of that family, the renowned singer Maithili Thakur ji, wants to return to Bihar, seeing the pace of changing Bihar. Today, Union Minister of State for Home @nityanandraibjp ji and I urged her that for the people of Bihar and for the development of Bihar, her contribution is expected by the common man of Bihar and that she fulfil their expectations. Best wishes to Bihar’s daughter Maithili Thakur ji!” the post reads.

Tawde added that both he and Nityanand Rai urged Maithili to contribute to Bihar’s development, calling her return a step toward fulfilling the expectations of the people of the state.

Maithili’s Political Journey Begins?

Though Thakur stopped short of making a political commitment, her recent interactions with top BJP leaders and her public statements about contributing to Bihar’s development indicate a soft political launch. “I am standing strong to contribute whatever possible towards the country’s development,” she said.

She was appointed as the ‘State Icon’ of Bihar by the Election Commission, a recognition that has further elevated her public profile.

Praised by PM Modi, Honoured Nationally

Earlier this year, Maithili Thakur was one of 24 influencers awarded at the first National Creators Awards for promoting Indian culture. She won the ‘Cultural Ambassador of the Year’ title. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also praised her rendition of a devotional song on Maa Shabari during the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony in Ayodhya.

Bihar Assembly Polls Scheduled in November

The Election Commission of India has announced that voting for the 243-seat Bihar Assembly will take place in two phases, on November 6 and November 11, with results to be declared on November 14. With political parties fielding fresh faces and influencers, the 2025 elections promise to be one of the most dynamic in recent memory.
