Shocking! Woman Marries Fifth Man Without Divorcing Four Others in Bhopal

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Bhopal district court has sentenced a woman to two years of rigorous imprisonment for marrying a lawyer while concealing that she had four previous husbands and had not legally divorced any of them. The complainant, advocate Tabrez Ullah, married Hasina on 27 May 2022, under the impression that she had divorced her previous husband, Salman.

Domestic Conflicts and Family Tragedy

Soon after marriage, Tabrez said, Hasina’s behavior changed, leading to frequent disputes at home. The ongoing domestic stress reportedly caused severe mental strain on the lawyer’s family, culminating in the suicide of Tabrez’s brother. This prompted the lawyer to investigate Hasina’s background more thoroughly, revealing her multiple prior marriages.

The complainant, advocate Tabrez Ullah, who practises at the Bhopal district court, told the court that he married Hasina on 27 May 2022. Before marriage, Hasina claimed she was previously married to a man named Salman and had taken a divorce. ‘Within one to one-and-a-half months of marriage, her behaviour changed and frequent disputes began at home’, he said.

Court Discovers Four Marriages, No Divorce Proof

During the trial, it emerged that Hasina had previously married Shamsher, Matloob Hasan, Salman, and Sabir, without submitting any legal divorce documents. The court observed that she had deliberately concealed her marital history and continued remarrying while misleading her husband.

Woman’s Defense Rejected

Hasina argued that three of her previous husbands were the same person under different names. However, she could not provide any documentary evidence. The court accepted certified documents and affidavits from Bhopal and Ujjain courts proving four distinct marriages, rejecting her defense.

Verdict and Sentence

On 19 January 2026, Judicial Magistrate First Class Megha Agrawal ruled that Hasina knowingly hid her prior marriages and remarried illegally. She was convicted under Section 82(2) of the Indian Penal Code, though she received the benefit of doubt under Section 82(1). She was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine but was granted bail and time to file an appeal.
