IIT Delhi Student Demands Impartial Investigation into Classmate’s Death

An IIT Delhi student, Priyank Rajput, has requested an impartial investigation into the death of 31-year-old Rishikesh Kumar, who fell from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex on August 22. Students have been protesting to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death. Rajput stated, “We wanted an impartial investigation into the reasons behind his suicide. He was actively involved in student activities and showed a passion for poetry and anchoring.”

Rajput remarked on concerns regarding the investigation, mentioning that some students believe the current committee established by the Director may not adequately address the situation. Kumar’s death, which occurred without a recovered suicide note, is under police investigation.

In a statement issued on August 21, IIT Delhi expressed its sorrow over Kumar’s passing and announced the formation of an external inquiry committee to investigate the incident thoroughly. The institute also declared it would provide financial assistance to Kumar’s family through contributions from faculty, students, and staff.

Kumar, who joined IIT Delhi in July 2025 and resided in a campus hostel, was referred to the IIT Delhi Hospital earlier this year following concerns raised by peers during Holi festivities. He received support from an institute psychiatrist and subsequently sought residential treatment in a specialized hospital for approximately one month before returning home. He was granted permission to withdraw from his second semester.

Upon reviewing Kumar’s health records in July 2026, IIT Delhi recommended he remain under parental supervision and provided ongoing counseling and medical support through the institute’s resources. He later requested to withdraw from the third semester as well, which was also approved.

The external inquiry committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive examination of the matter and suggesting improvements for student support systems. Additionally, the institute plans to appoint an external ombudsperson to address unresolved student grievances and has encouraged students to share suggestions for enhancing campus safety and support.
