Roger Federer Hints at Future Return After US Open Legends Match

Tennis icon Roger Federer expressed his appreciation to fans during an emotional return to the court at the US Open 2026 Legends match, indicating the possibility of future appearances.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion who retired from professional tennis in 2022, was met with a standing ovation from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium before competing against former rival Andy Roddick in a one-set singles match, which he won 6-3. He later teamed up with John McEnroe to defeat Roddick and Andre Agassi 7-5 in a doubles match, as reported by the ATP Tour.

During a post-match interview, Federer shared, “I hope this isn’t my last time on court. John McEnroe is still out there doing what he loves, and that inspires me to believe that maybe someday I’ll get another chance to return to this court and play in front of all my fans,” as quoted by JioHotstar.

The five-time US Open champion reflected on the significance of returning to a venue where he achieved considerable success, stating, “It was an honour, it was special, it was amazing. A big thank you to everyone in the stadium and to all the fans who have supported me over the years. It’s been incredible, and I’ve enjoyed every moment.”

Federer, who also celebrated this occasion with his family, emphasized the unforgettable nature of the moment at Flushing Meadows, saying, “It’s obviously incredible to share this with my family. My wife and my parents are here too. But honestly, to have this moment here at the US Open in New York where I’ve had so much success has been incredible.”

This week, Federer is scheduled to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He stated, “Hopefully, you have not had enough of me, and by Monday when we have a ring ceremony on centre court again, I’ll see you then.”

Prominent tennis figures including Serena Williams, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud, and Alexandra Eala were present at the event, which marked a nostalgic return for Federer, who had five consecutive titles at the US Open from 2004 to 2008.

Having turned 45 earlier this month, Federer is among 29 members of the exclusive ATP No. 1 Club, with a record 310 weeks at the top of the ATP Rankings, including a record 237 consecutive weeks as world No. 1.
