Shame For Pakistan As Talk Show Guest Calls For ‘Firing Bullets’ To Halt Match

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India–Pakistan Asia Cup clash in Dubai was always going to be more than just a cricket match. With fans on edge and players confronting each other on the field, the game carried all the hallmarks of the historic rivalry. But what unfolded on Pakistani television during the contest has left a bitter aftertaste far beyond the boundary line.

A shocking clip from a Pakistani talk show went viral during the game, showing a presenter asking a disturbing question in jest. “Sir agar ladke yaha se jaan maare to kya hum jeet sakte hain?” The response from one of the panelists was even more startling. With a laugh, he said, “Mere khayal mein ya to ye karde ya kuch ladke firing hi kar dena idhar match he khatam karo kyuki confirm hai hum harenge.” The suggestion, even if made casually, has been roundly condemned online as disgraceful. For a nation where cricket fuels raw emotions, the use of such language in a public discussion struck many as deeply irresponsible.

Debate Overshadows Match

While the cricket itself had its share of heated exchanges, the fallout from this television exchange has shifted the attention away from the field. Former Pakistan cricketers Basit Ali and Kamran Akmal were also on the panel that day, and though they did not make the comment themselves, their presence on the programme has tied their names to the controversy. The episode is yet another embarrassment for Pakistan cricket, which has been struggling on and off the pitch in recent months.

On the ground, fans were treated to an entertaining contest. Abhishek Sharma delivered a masterclass with a brutal yet elegant 74 off 39 balls, steering India’s chase alongside childhood friend Shubman Gill in a commanding 105-run partnership. Their effort made light work of the target of 172, with India cruising home by six wickets and seven balls remaining. The clinical chase highlighted India’s growing batting depth but was overshadowed in media space by the unforgivable remarks made on TV.

Tensions On and Off the Field

The match itself was not short of flashpoints. Pacer Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf were seen exchanging words with Indian batters as tempers flared under the Dubai lights. At one point, Gautam Gambhir, present in the dugout, was seen stepping in along with the umpires to calm matters before they got out of hand. Haris Rauf’s fighter jet celebration also drew reactions, but despite the intensity on the field, both sides managed to complete an exciting cricketing contest without incident.

Unfortunately, what happened in the studio gave rise to questions about the state of cricket discourse in Pakistan. Instead of analysis or constructive criticism, the casual talk about firing bullets has led to broad condemnation from fans across the globe. For many, such comments fuel needless aggression in a rivalry already known for its sensitive nature.

Haris Rauf Keeps Composure

Amid the drama, Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf, whose fiery spell briefly gave India some trouble, kept his focus on cricket. “My job is to play,” he was quoted as saying when asked about the confrontations and celebrations. His statement came as a much-needed contrast to the reckless television chatter, reminding everyone that players themselves have continued to view the contest as a sporting battle, not a political or violent one.

With India now holding the edge in the Asia Cup momentum, the bigger debate remains how Pakistan’s cricket community can distance itself from the irresponsible rhetoric on national television. For a rivalry watched by millions, the sport deserves better than casual lines about violence.
