Schools Closed in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha Due to Flooding

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent heavy rainfall and rising river levels have severely impacted daily life in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, leading to the closure of schools in multiple districts. Authorities have issued directives in response to waterlogging, overflowing rivers, and flood-like conditions affecting numerous areas.

In Uttar Pradesh, the situation is particularly alarming in districts adjacent to the Ganga, Yamuna, Saryu, and Rapti rivers. Continuous rainfall has caused roads and residential areas to become waterlogged, and villages in low-lying areas have been inundated. As a precautionary measure, district administrations have declared school holidays in regions such as Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Mirzapur, and Bhadohi.

Similarly, Odisha is experiencing adverse weather conditions resulting in flooding and heavy rainfall, prompting school closures in districts like Jajpur and Bhadrak. In Jajpur, the local administration has mandated that all schools remain closed on August 18 due to the prevailing flood situation.

District-Specific School Closures in Uttar Pradesh

The school closure notices vary across different districts, with some orders applying to all students while others are specific to certain age groups. In Prayagraj, schools for classes 1 to 12 have been shut due to persistent rain and rising water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna, which, although currently below danger levels, are being closely monitored.

In Kaushambi, all schools from pre-primary to Class 12 have been ordered to close. This directive is applicable to council-run, government-aided, and recognised institutions, including both Hindi- and English-medium schools. Mirzapur has restricted classes up to class 8 as the excess rainfall has caused the Adva Dam to reach its capacity, leading to flooding in nearby regions.

Bhadohi has also enforced closures for grades 1 through 12. However, the teaching staff have been instructed to report for departmental responsibilities despite the closures. The educational landscape in these districts has been fundamentally altered as the region grapples with these environmental challenges.

Odisha’s Response to Flooding and School Closures

In Odisha, authorities have taken decisive steps to ensure student safety amid ongoing flooding. In Jajpur, all schools, including government, government-aided, and private institutions, were ordered to close on August 18 because of the adverse weather conditions. This decision affects educational facilities across various levels, from elementary to higher secondary.

Furthermore, in Bhadrak, the situation remains critical, with 268 schools reported to be impacted due to flooding in the region. Consequently, educational activities have become significantly disrupted, and the local administration is actively monitoring the situation to provide timely updates on safety measures.

The flooding has also had broader implications beyond the education sector. In Uttar Pradesh, over 200 homes in Unnao have been surrounded by water, and more than sixty villages in Farrukhabad are grappling with the aftermath of rising river levels. Notably, the Saryu River in Barabanki has reportedly risen by 50 centimetres above the danger mark, while the Rapti River in Shravasti is at approximately 30 centimetres above its own danger threshold.

In Varanasi, the rising waters of the Ganga have necessitated the relocation of the famous Ganga Aarti from Dashashwamedh Ghat to a rooftop venue at the Ganga Seva Nidhi office. As the weather continues to be a concern, authorities in the affected districts are diligently monitoring conditions and advising residents to exercise caution amidst these challenges.
