Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently characterised the territorial issue as a critical topic in ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia. Following discussions with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, Zelenskyy emphasised that complexities surrounding the matter could ultimately be settled at the leadership level.

During a press conference after the talks, Zelenskyy noted that three rounds of negotiations had occurred, and labelled them as substantive. He conveyed optimism that these discussions might invigorate peace negotiations and lead to a durable agreement. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to both envoys from the United States for their efforts in Kyiv.

He elaborated on key areas of focus during the discussions, highlighting the importance of ensuring continued dialogue with American and European partners for effective solutions in various domains.

Economic Support and Security Guarantees Discussed

Zelenskyy outlined that the talks encompassed not only territorial discussions but also included security guarantees, Ukraine’s strategic future, and economic plans for recovery and reconstruction. He underscored the significance of a robust military as a core aspect of any future security framework.

He stated, “Our army must be strong, and for us, this is a key security guarantee.” Zelenskyy called for clear and robust guarantees to address potential future challenges the nation may face. His emphasis on military strength reflects Ukraine’s dedication to ensuring its defence capability amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

Furthermore, he noted the essential involvement of European representatives in the talks, indicating a collaborative approach among Ukraine, the US, and European allies to further consultations for peace efforts.

US Envoys Provide Insights from Moscow Discussions

Witkoff, addressing the media alongside Zelenskyy, shared that the US delegation brought forward ideas previously discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. He asserted that progress had been made and that essential ideas from those discussions were incorporated into the Kyiv talks.

Witkoff articulated that the United States is pursuing a diplomatic resolution rather than a military one regarding the ongoing conflict. He credited Trump’s prior diplomatic engagements in resolving international disputes, aiming for a similar outcome with Ukraine and Russia.

Kushner contributed by stating the need to consider Russia’s objectives alongside the broader aspirations that could be pursued post-conflict. He indicated that there are underlying goals that potentially align with Russia’s long-term interests, which could facilitate dialogue towards a peaceful settlement.

Future Negotiations Planned with European Partners

Zelenskyy remarked that while specific negotiation formats may be preferred, the continuity of dialogue remains the priority. In expressing appreciation for the involvement of Witkoff and Kushner, he highlighted their roles in revitalising the negotiation process.

Concluding the press conference, Zelenskyy announced plans for subsequent talks involving the United States and the E3 countries—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—following the initial discussions with the US envoys. He reiterated the objective to secure a dignified and reliable peace for Ukraine.

This meeting in Kyiv marked an essential step in maintaining dialogue among Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv, reflecting a commitment to address territorial, security, and economic aspects vital for a diplomatic resolution to the enduring conflict.
