The Delhi Government has taken decisive action by suspending five officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) following the collapse of a building in Satya Niketan. This includes the Deputy Commissioner of the South Zone, an Executive Engineer, a Superintendent Engineer, an Assistant Engineer, and a Junior Engineer. These suspensions were announced on September 7, amid ongoing rescue operations at the site.

As the situation unfolds, the death toll from the incident has reportedly reached seven, with twelve individuals rescued thus far. MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar expressed condolences, confirming the loss of life and noting that adjacent buildings have also been assessed for structural integrity.

Khirwar mentioned that demolitions of nearby structures were planned, stating, “We will take it up for demolition in a calibrated manner in the next one to two days.” He highlighted previous efforts by the corporation, noting that between the last three months, 960 demolitions have taken place and notices have been served to over 1,500 buildings for possible sealing or demolition.

Search for Building Owner Continues

Authorities are actively searching for Hariram Bansal, the owner of the building that collapsed, who is currently untraceable. Multiple teams from the Delhi Police have been deployed in this endeavour, and a Look Out Circular (LOC) has been issued to assist in locating him.

A neighbour of Bansal, identified as SP Sharma, described the missing individual as a longstanding member of the community who owns several properties in the area, including a hardware shop. Sharma noted that the gap in awareness surrounding Bansal’s connections to the collapsed building is concerning, expressing uncertainty about the specifics of his ownership.

Sharma elaborated on Bansal’s character, stating, “He has a decent personality and has been living here for years.” This incident has prompted the neighbourhood to reflect on Bansal’s involvement and the broader implications of building safety in the area.

Rescue Operations Underway

Rescue operations at the collapse site are ongoing, with personnel working tirelessly to locate any remaining victims. Narendra Singh Bundela, Inspector General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), indicated that the operation’s completion timeline remains unclear. Efforts continue to be complicated by the extensive rubble that must be cleared to facilitate the search.

Bundela stated, “Our mandate is technical search and rescue, and we are committed to that. The State Government is assessing the situation progressively.” He acknowledged the challenges faced in estimating a timeline due to the complexity involved in this type of operation.

Among the deceased is a student from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, identified as Arpit, who was enrolled in a B.Com course. The college’s principal, Professor Gyanatosh Kumar Jha, confirmed this tragic loss and noted that another injured student is receiving treatment at AIIMS Trauma Centre. The college administration has been actively involved in supporting affected students during this difficult time, arranging food and accommodation after nearby shops ceased operations.

Professor Jha remarked on the college’s commitment to student welfare, highlighting the efforts made to ensure that those affected have access to necessary resources. This incident has brought a heightened awareness of safety protocols within the community and educational institutions alike.
