Laos Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavan Phomvihane is currently in India for an official visit and met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 3. This meeting serves as a significant step towards deeper cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and technology.

During this meeting, President Murmu welcomed Phomvihane, noting that this was his first visit to India. The President highlighted the enduring civilisational ties that connect India and Laos, which are exemplified in their shared heritage of Buddhism and the Ramayana. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, a milestone celebrated by both leaders.

President Murmu acknowledged the recent visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Laos in October 2024, where several agreements were reached during ASEAN-related Summits, adding momentum to the partnership between the two nations. The significance of these diplomatic interactions was underscored during their discussions.

Trade and Investment Opportunities Discussed

In the context of trade relations, President Murmu remarked that while bilateral trade between India and Laos has seen growth, there remains considerable potential for further enhancement. The President emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in both trade and investment to maximise benefits for both countries.

The discussion included a focus on specific sectors where India is ready to expand its cooperation with Laos. Areas identified include information and communication technology (ICT), healthcare, agriculture, irrigation, manufacturing, renewable energy, and electricity. The President noted these sectors align with Laos’ socio-economic development goals and aspirations of its youth.

Moreover, President Murmu expressed India’s willingness to share its knowledge and experiences in innovation and the knowledge-based economy with Laos, thereby allowing both countries to benefit mutually from their respective advancements.

Strengthening Development Partnerships

The development partnership between India and Laos was another key topic, with both leaders agreeing that a closer collaboration would produce significant benefits for their peoples. President Murmu highlighted how this partnership is increasingly aligned with the socio-economic development needs of Laos.

The President’s office also shared details of this meeting via a post on X, reiterating the deep-rooted civilisational ties both nations share, as well as the importance of the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This highlights the historical significance of their interactions and commitment to future cooperation.

Phomvihane’s visit, which began on June 1 and is scheduled to conclude on June 3, underscores Laos’ interest in bolstering bilateral ties with India. Both leaders are hopeful that the discussions will pave the way for more extensive cooperation, marking a significant phase in their diplomatic relationship.
