S Jaishankar Commences Ghana Visit to Strengthen India-Africa Trade Relations

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in Ghana, commencing his trip on Tuesday as part of a three-nation tour across Africa. This initiative reflects India’s intention to enhance bilateral relationships in trade, investment, and infrastructure between India and African nations. Following his time in Ghana, Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia.

Upon his arrival in Accra, Jaishankar expressed his gratitude for the warm reception via a post on X, highlighting the significance of his visit in advancing India’s Comprehensive Partnership with Ghana. His engagement is seen as a crucial opportunity to boost economic ties and mutual development.

Jaishankar’s visit marks an important step in reinforcing India’s commitment to its partnerships within the African continent, showcasing India’s broader agenda of strengthening its presence and influence in the Global South.

Meetings with Ghanaian Officials

During his stay in Ghana, Jaishankar is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Ablakwa, who has publicly welcomed Jaishankar, referred to him as a “great friend of Ghana”. He anticipates productive exchanges and impactful agreements that will benefit both nations.

As part of these discussions, the ministers aim to review the existing ties and identify new avenues for collaboration. Ghana and India elevated their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership last year, a move that has set the foundation for enhanced strategic cooperation.

In his communications, Ablakwa has indicated his enthusiasm for the upcoming interactions, expressing confidence in their potential to lead to significant collaborative outcomes that will serve the interests of both countries intelligently.

After concluding his commitments in Ghana, Jaishankar will advance to Côte d’Ivoire, where additional discussions will continue. His itinerary encompasses crucial meetings with the leadership of these nations, allowing for a comprehensive review of regional cooperation on various pressing issues.

In Addis Ababa, Jaishankar is scheduled to chair the Regional Heads of Mission Conference. This event is anticipated to draw Indian diplomats from across the region, providing a platform for discussing strategies and collaboration on matters concerning bilateral and regional importance.
