The CSR Journal Magazine

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that “war anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere,” highlighting the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. He expressed concerns regarding the extensive repercussions these conflicts have on global populations and economies. Jaishankar made these remarks during the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan held in Delhi on October 24 coinciding with United Nations Day.

During his address, he reiterated India’s stance that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable methods to resolve such disputes. He specifically mentioned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Middle East. According to Jaishankar, the ramifications of these conflicts extend beyond the immediate regions, affecting societies and economies that have minimal influence over the situations.

Jaishankar emphasised the necessity for the international community to avoid remaining passive observers in these crises. He indicated that India is actively engaged in efforts to mediate and resolve these conflicts, expressing a willingness to collaborate with other nations to restore peace. “We cannot remain helpless spectators,” he stated, underscoring India’s commitment to promoting dialogue and diplomacy as essential solutions.

Addressing Terrorism as a Global Threat

In addition to discussing regional conflicts, Jaishankar identified terrorism as a significant threat to global peace. He condemned the use of terrorism as an “instrument of statecraft,” labelling it as “simply unacceptable.” He asserted that such actions cannot be justified or rationalised, calling for a unified global response to combat terrorism in all its forms.

Jaishankar remarked that the persistent threat of terrorism is exacerbated by the fact that not all nations exhibit a zero-tolerance approach towards it. He pointed out that despite historical lessons regarding the consequences of terrorism, some countries still prioritise political interests over collective security. He urged for heightened global awareness and stronger collaborative efforts to address this pressing issue.

Linking the concepts of global peace and economic development, Jaishankar articulated that progress and prosperity are inherently interconnected. He noted that in a world reliant on global supply chains and shared resources, the advancement of societies cannot be achieved if some are left behind. “Progress and prosperity are the flip side of conflict and violence,” he stated, emphasising the need for inclusive growth.

The Interconnection of Peace and Prosperity

Jaishankar further elaborated on the idea that the world cannot thrive when it is divided into prosperous and impoverished regions. He warned that such disparities create a “prescription for continuous instability” in an era characterised by intricate supply chains and globalised markets. He stressed that collective efforts are essential to ensure that all nations can benefit from global economic opportunities.

He concluded by reiterating that the international community must work together to foster a stable and peaceful world. By addressing both conflicts and terrorism, nations can create an environment conducive to economic development and shared prosperity. Jaishankar’s remarks serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of global issues and the necessity for collaborative solutions.

In summary, Jaishankar’s statements reflect India’s commitment to promoting dialogue, combating terrorism, and fostering economic development as integral components of global peace. His call for collective action underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the world today.
