This year’s Raksha Bandhan saw a unique celebration at the Dhanbad Collectorate, where schoolgirls from government institutions tied rakhis to senior district officials. The occasion was marked not only by the traditional act but also by the students’ concerns regarding safety and infrastructure in their schools. They connected the symbolic festival of brotherhood to significant challenges they face in their educational experience.

The students, who crafted handmade rakhis, presented them to various officials including the Deputy Commissioner and the Senior Superintendent of Police. This act was intended to highlight the bond between siblings, but the conversation quickly shifted to the pressing issues affecting their schools. Among their concerns were damaged school buildings, the absence of fundamental facilities, and safety hazards encountered while commuting to school.

Officials expressed their commitment to addressing the students’ concerns, assuring them that these issues will be investigated. The interaction provided a rare opportunity for students to raise their voices directly, setting the stage for potential reforms in school conditions.

Infrastructure Issues Highlighted by Students

During their interaction, the students highlighted various infrastructure-related shortcomings within their schools. Issues such as inadequate classrooms, missing boundary walls, and the need for better playground facilities were brought to the forefront. Some students shared unsettling experiences of harassment and eve-teasing on their journeys to and from school.

The Dhanbad administration responded by stating that multiple civil projects are underway, with several already in the tender or estimation phase. This initiative aims to enhance the infrastructure of schools and improve the educational environment significantly over the coming months. Deputy Commissioner Aditya Ranjan mentioned that this direct engagement with students was vital for understanding real conditions, surpassing the information in official reports.

Ranjan emphasised that the true measure of their work lies in the direct feedback from students and teachers, rather than solely in bureaucratic documentation. He acknowledged that many challenges persisted, which necessitated a more comprehensive approach to the development of education in the area.

Plans for School Safety and Enhanced Facilities

The district administration’s commitment extends to addressing concerns affecting approximately 1,750 schools in Dhanbad. Ongoing civil work is focused on around 500 schools, with evaluations being conducted for an additional 500 institutions. The goal is to equip these schools with essential facilities such as benches, computers, and recreational equipment, rivaling the standards found in private schools.

In light of the safety concerns raised, the Senior Superintendent of Police announced the implementation of regular police patrols around schools to enhance security and provide reassurance to students. This initiative aims to curb harassment and ensure a safer commuting experience for the girls.

Ranjan indicated that tangible improvements should be expected within the next six months, reflecting the administration’s dedication to creating a conducive learning environment for all students in government schools. The administration’s proactive approach underscores a commitment to educational advancement and student welfare in the region.
