Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma Directs Meeting for National Waterway-48 Report

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has convened a crucial meeting focused on the advancement of the Jawai-Luni-Rann of Kutch National Waterway, designated as NW-48. During the meeting, he stressed the importance of developing waterway connectivity for cargo transportation and exports, underscoring it as a top priority for the state government.

The meeting took place at the Chief Minister’s Office, where Sharma called for a comprehensive report on the project from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and IIT Madras. This report is to evaluate both the technical and financial aspects of NW-48, as well as to conduct a comparative study regarding anticipated vessel traffic.

Earlier in the process, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established between the state government and IWAI on October 27, 2025. This agreement demonstrates a commitment to advancing the objectives set forth in the meeting and serves as a foundational step for the waterway’s development.

Presentation on Detailed Project Report

During the meeting, Professor K. Murali from IIT Madras delivered an extensive presentation concerning the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) aimed at facilitating the project’s initiation. This presentation was integral in outlining the steps necessary to ensure the operationalisation of NW-48.

Sharma highlighted the anticipated benefits for both local industries and traders once the National Waterway is operational. He indicated that seamless transportation of goods could significantly enhance the economic landscape of Rajasthan, as well as that of neighbouring states.

The Chief Minister asserted that the successful implementation of this national waterway has the potential to serve as a cornerstone for comprehensive state development while also favourably impacting trade activities. The planned waterway may notably reduce cargo transportation costs, thereby facilitating a more efficient logistics framework.

Potential Impacts on Trade and Industry

The operationalisation of NW-48 is expected to enable direct cargo movement to the Arabian Sea through the Rann of Kutch, a significant geographical advantage. This newly developed pathway will traverse Rajasthan and Gujarat, ensuring that various export goods, including petrochemicals, cement, minerals, chemicals, and industrial products, can be effectively transported.

The Chief Minister’s vision emphasises that through the establishment of this waterway, trade efficiency will be maximised, leading to broader economic growth in the region. The project’s successful execution could create a more integrated supply chain, fostering an environment conducive to both local and international business operations.

As the initiative progresses, the state government is anticipated to work closely with the IWAI and IIT Madras to ensure all necessary assessments are completed. These evaluations will be crucial for determining the viability of the waterway and for capturing any necessary adjustments to optimise the project framework in accordance with best practices.
