Indian Government Dismantles Narco-Cartel in Northeast, Arrests 18

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central government announced the successful dismantling of an international narco-cartel following coordinated operations conducted on 23 October 2026 across Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur. Union Home Minister Amit Shah detailed the operation’s achievements in a post on X, stating that it represents a significant effort against drug trafficking. Shah highlighted that the operation involved simultaneous crackdowns at 38 locations within the three states, indicating the extensive reach and scale of the enforcement actions taken.

During the operation, authorities reportedly uncovered hawala transactions valued at ₹100 crore, which led to the freezing of 1,424 bank accounts. The crackdown also resulted in the attachment of properties worth ₹17.82 crore, the seizure of 500 detonators, and the recovery of ₹12 lakh in cash. A total of 18 individuals were arrested in connection with the operation, marking a substantial blow to the narcotics network operating in the region.

The network is alleged to have trafficked narcotics across the borders of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, using what has been termed the Death Triangle Corridor. This operation is part of India’s broader strategy to combat drug trafficking and aims to dismantle every drug network by the end of 2029, as articulated by the Home Minister.

Government’s Commitment to Eradicate Drug Networks

In his remarks, Amit Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling the drug problem in India. He stated that the offensive reflects India’s determination to eliminate drug trafficking and related activities. Shah emphasised that the government will continue to intensify its efforts until the last remnants of drug cartels are eradicated. He expressed gratitude to the anti-narcotics teams, which include central agencies and police forces from the involved states, for their dedication and effectiveness during the operation.

Earlier, on 21 October, during the Police Commemoration Day event in New Delhi, Shah announced a comprehensive plan to combat drug trafficking over the next several years. He indicated that the Union Home Ministry has committed to a united front against drugs throughout the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, 2028, and 2029. The goal is to achieve a drug-free India by 31 December 2029, which Shah described as a priority for the government.

Shah articulated the broader implications of the drug problem, asserting that it undermines future generations, imposes economic burdens, and financially supports organisations engaged in anti-national activities. He urged police forces across the country to fully commit to the mission of creating a drug-free society, following the roadmap established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Impact of Operation Trident

The ramifications of Operation Trident extend beyond immediate arrests and seizures. The operation is seen as a crucial step in disrupting the financial networks that support drug trafficking. By targeting hawala transactions and freezing bank accounts, authorities aim to dismantle the economic foundations of these illicit operations. The seizure of explosives also raises concerns about potential violence associated with drug trafficking activities.

As the government continues its campaign against drugs, the focus remains on collaborative efforts among various law enforcement agencies. The successful execution of Operation Trident serves as a model for future operations aimed at combating drug-related crime. The commitment to a drug-free India is framed not only as a law enforcement issue but as a societal imperative that requires collective action from all levels of government and society.

In conclusion, Operation Trident represents a significant milestone in India’s ongoing battle against narcotics. The coordinated efforts across Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur illustrate the government’s resolve to confront and dismantle drug cartels operating within its borders. The operation’s outcomes are expected to contribute to a broader strategy aimed at fostering a safer and drug-free environment for future generations.
