Shilpa Rao Allegedly Interrupted by Kutle Khan at Music Project Festival

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent Bollywood Music Project in Mumbai has been marred by controversy following an incident involving singer-composer Kutle Khan and vocalist Shilpa Rao. According to Khan’s team, it was Rao who interrupted Khan’s performance, rather than the other way around. The incident occurred during the festival’s 10th-anniversary edition on October 24, where fans expressed their discontent regarding Khan’s conduct as he began performing while Rao was still concluding her set.

Khan’s manager, Sharad Sharma, has refuted claims that the folk singer disrupted Rao’s closing remarks. In an interview with News18, he explained that Khan had already taken the stage for his performance, which had been shortened, when Rao returned to thank the audience. Sharma attributed the delays in the festival schedule to Himesh Reshammiya’s lengthy three-hour sound check, which reportedly caused several artists to receive reduced performance times.

Sharma elaborated that artists were initially allocated between 15 to 20 minutes for their sets, but Khan was ultimately given only 10 minutes. Despite this reduction, his team accepted the time constraint, only for Rao to return to the stage after finishing her performance, during which Khan was already performing.

Reactions from the Audience and Social Media

The abrupt conclusion of Rao’s performance and the subsequent overlap with Khan’s set did not sit well with concertgoers. Many took to social media to criticise Khan’s actions, labelling them unprofessional. Following the incident, a post on Twitter highlighted Rao’s distress as her goodbye message was reportedly cut short while Khan continued to perform. This portrayal has led to a wave of backlash directed towards Khan.

Sharma maintained that Khan had paused his performance to allow Rao to speak, asserting that there was no animosity between the two artists. He mentioned that Rao had even complimented Khan during the incident. The manager expressed concern that the narrative surrounding the event was being skewed, potentially misrepresenting Khan’s intentions.

Sharma also claimed that festival organiser Deepak Chaudhary had approached Khan during the situation, urging him to perform a specific song. He suggested that Rao should have concluded her remarks before leaving the stage initially, rather than returning while Khan was already performing. This, he argued, contributed to the confusion and subsequent criticism of Khan.

Scheduling Issues and Organisational Challenges

The scheduling conflicts at the festival were reportedly due to the organisers securing permission to hold the event for only one day. This restriction necessitated that all artists perform on the same day, leading to a tightly packed schedule. Sharma alleged that Reshammiya’s extended sound check exacerbated the situation, resulting in less time available for other performances.

Khan’s team has categorically denied any intention on his part to disrupt Rao’s closing remarks, emphasising that both artists were affected by the shortened performance slots and the delays caused by the festival’s arrangements. The manager’s comments shed light on the complexities involved in managing live performances, particularly in a festival setting.

As the situation continues to unfold, both Khan and Rao’s teams are navigating the fallout from the incident. The differing accounts highlight the challenges artists face during live events, where timing and coordination are critical to ensuring a smooth experience for both performers and audiences alike.
