Trump Claims US Has Secured Greenland, Venezuela in ‘Greatest Real Estate Deal’

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States has allegedly secured control over Greenland and Venezuela, referring to these acquisitions as the “greatest real estate deal in history.” This statement was made during a campaign rally for Republican candidates in Perry, Georgia, on Saturday, local time. Despite his claims, neither territory has been transferred to US sovereignty.

During the rally, Trump asserted that Denmark had handed over Greenland to the US and boasted about American dominance over Venezuela, particularly its oil reserves. He stated, “Denmark was so great, they gave us Greenland. You do know that, right? We already have that. We’re doing good with that, aren’t we?”

He further commented on previous concerns regarding the US potentially taking control of Greenland, claiming, “All of them talked, ‘Donald Trump, Donald Trump, he’s going to attack! He’s going to attack Greenland!’ But Denmark gave us—we signed an agreement.” He emphasised that this would be remembered as a significant real estate deal.

Details of the US-Denmark Agreement

Trump’s remarks followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Denmark on October 22, aimed at enhancing maritime industrial cooperation and expanding US shipbuilding capabilities. However, the agreement explicitly excludes Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The MoU states, “This MoU does not apply to Greenland or the Faroe Islands,” and clarifies that it does not constitute an international treaty, creating no legal rights or obligations. Each country is expected to cover its own costs. Denmark has maintained its sovereignty over Greenland, despite a defence agreement that expanded US military rights in the region.

Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the commercial focus of the maritime agreement, with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stating that it opens significant opportunities for Danish companies and could create new jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

Trump’s Focus on Greenland’s Resources and Venezuela

Trump’s claims regarding Greenland follow recent US initiatives concerning the territory, which remains under Danish sovereignty. On October 13, he announced on Truth Social that large-scale exploration for oil, gas, and minerals was set to begin in Greenland. This announcement followed a tripartite agreement involving Washington, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

Trump highlighted the strategic importance of Greenland, stating that its resources would enhance US and European security. He argued that the territory’s location would assist in detecting potential threats, including drones and missiles.

Regarding Venezuela, Trump’s claims emerged after significant political developments in the country. In January, US forces reportedly captured former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. This operation raised questions about potential violations of Venezuelan sovereignty, but Trump defended it as a liberation from a “very powerful, very nasty dictatorship.”

In September, Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the United Nations General Assembly, indicating a desire to rebuild relations with the US and pursue democratic elections. She expressed aspirations for cooperation and respect in international relations.

Trump Announces Audi Investment in Georgia

At the same rally, Trump announced a significant investment by German carmaker Audi in Georgia, stating that the company would invest $4.2 billion in a new plant near Macon. This facility is expected to produce 200,000 vehicles annually and create approximately 4,500 jobs.

Audi chairman Gernot Döllner, present at the rally, affirmed the commitment to the American market. The announcement comes as Republicans aim to retain their majorities in Congress ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, amid concerns over the president’s popularity and economic issues.
