The CSR Journal Magazine

The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has taken significant steps to address tax defaults by attaching 136 properties valued at Rs 91.10 crore. This action aims to secure recovery of overdue pre-GST dues, indicating a stricter approach towards long-standing tax arrears. The state’s Finance Minister confirmed that the government is aiming for a balance between facilitating business operations and enforcing tax compliance.

Details of Property Attachments and Auctions

The Finance Minister elaborated that out of the total properties attached, those worth Rs 15.27 crore have already been auctioned, bringing in some recovery of unpaid dues. Additionally, several properties are slated for sale pending official approval. According to official records, 78 properties valued at Rs 50.58 crore are located in key districts, while the remaining 58 properties, worth Rs 40.52 crore, are scattered across various districts, states, or Union Territories.

Status of Auctions and Recovery Efforts

The government has already auctioned properties worth Rs 15.27 crore, which has contributed to the recovery of some dues. An approval has been issued to auction 35 properties valued at Rs 33.77 crore, with specific auction dates set for 21 properties worth Rs 13.68 crore. Concurrently, permissions are being sought for 15 properties valued at Rs 16.42 crore as part of the ongoing recovery process. Recovery certificates have also been issued for 24 properties worth Rs 10.61 crore at the Deputy Commissioner’s level.

Extension of OTS Scheme and Warnings to Defaulters

The Finance Minister announced that the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme has been extended, allowing businesses an opportunity to clear their old liabilities. He highlighted this extension as a unique chance for traders to settle their pre-GST dues, while also stressing that intentional tax evasion will face zero tolerance. He reaffirmed that strict actions, including auctions, will persist against those who continuously default on their tax responsibilities.

Government’s Focus on Revenue Collection

The Mann administration is positioning this drive as essential for enhancing revenue collection while also providing avenues for compliance for genuine traders. With ongoing auctions and additional ones on the schedule, the government has made it explicit that recovery procedures will progress alongside the extended settlement option for taxpayers.
