Priyanka Gandhi Criticises Delhi Police Response to Protests, Declares India a Dictatorship

The CSR Journal Magazine

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a member of Parliament from the Congress party, has contended that India is no longer a democracy but a dictatorship governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Her statements followed significant actions taken by the Delhi Police against protesters in the capital on October 10, 2026. Gandhi’s assertions, made during a post on X, critique the alleged illegal detention of 254 opposition party members and the infringement of their constitutional rights.

She expressed grave concern over the treatment of these MPs, noting, “They rough up 254 MPs and detain them completely illegally,” further alleging that the response was indicative of a broader strategy to silence dissenting voices. Gandhi also highlighted the police actions towards other members of the opposition amid rising tensions in the city.

Gandhi’s comments arise in the context of extensive police barricading and preventive detentions aimed at controlling protests. The ongoing situation has led her to warn that the constitutional principle of peaceful assembly is under severe threat.

Concerns Over Electoral Integrity

Gandhi further articulated that the actions taken by the government are emblematic of a concerted effort to manipulate electoral outcomes, as she claimed that the ruling administration is complicit with the Election Commission. The detention of protesters, including key political figures, such as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, demonstrates a chilling effect on those seeking to voice dissent, according to Gandhi. She stated, “If this isn’t proof that they have cheated the elections with the collusion of the Election Commission, then what is?”

The Prime Minister’s administration, she argues, is fearful of the potential exposure of its alleged illegitimacy and has resorted to repressive measures to stifle protest. Gandhi concluded that all parties involved in subverting democracy are acting treasonously against the nation.

In relation to the protests, Kejriwal, who was detained alongside other demonstrators, released a video asserting that young citizens are awakening to the issues at hand and that protesters would not be intimidated by government actions. His comments resonate with Gandhi’s remarks on the necessity of accountability in governance.

Delhi Police Actions and Current Situation

As events unfolded, the Delhi Police maintained that they were enforcing the law by taking demonstrators into preventive custody, citing a lack of permission for the protests. Official reports indicate that approximately one thousand individuals have been detained throughout the capital as protests escalated in various districts. The demonstrators had aimed to gather at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who has faced escalating scrutiny.

Despite the crackdown, various leaders, including Neha Bora from the All India Students’ Association (AISA), have been vocal amidst the detentions. The ongoing protests appear to reflect deep-seated concerns regarding electoral integrity and governance in India, with current actions by the authorities sparking considerable debate.

With multiple political factions involved and the police response continuing, the situation remains dynamic as tensions mount. Analysts are observing how these events will influence public sentiment and political proceedings in the coming weeks.
