Delhi-NCR Sees Temperature Drop and Winter Chill After Overnight Rain

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi-NCR has undergone a significant transformation in weather due to persistent rainfall overnight, resulting in a notable drop in temperatures and the onset of a wintry chill. The capital saw steady showers late on Thursday night, with reports indicating waterlogged roads in various areas, including Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and the vicinity of Jamia Millia Islamia. Visuals captured during this time depicted the impact of the rain on daily life, highlighting the overcast skies and wet conditions.

This abrupt change in weather coincided with a marked improvement in air quality across the region. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that the Air Quality Index (AQI) registered at 133 at 4 am on Friday, a significant decrease from the levels exceeding 200 observed earlier in the week. This AQI reading falls within the moderate category, contrasting with the poor air quality recorded just days prior.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Delhi and surrounding districts on October 29, predicting further rain and thunderstorms over the next 24 to 48 hours. Rainfall commenced on Thursday evening and is anticipated to persist, with conditions expected to gradually improve by early November.

Forecast for Upcoming Days

The Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi has indicated that Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad are likely to experience predominantly cloudy skies. Residents can expect one or two spells of light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Forecasts suggest light to moderate showers on October 30, with the potential for isolated heavy rainfall during the night.

Weather conditions are projected to improve by October 31, when partly cloudy skies are expected across the region. No weather warnings have been issued for that day, indicating a possible respite from the recent downpours. Starting November 1, Delhi-NCR is likely to see mainly clear skies and more stable weather, with fair conditions anticipated across the districts.

In addition to the weather changes in Delhi-NCR, the IMD has issued warnings for intense rainfall in parts of central and eastern India due to a remnant cyclonic circulation. Areas in North Bihar may experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall on October 30, with similar conditions expected in Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Warnings for Other Regions

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also forecast for Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and East Uttar Pradesh. The weather department has issued a low-to-moderate flash flood risk alert for vulnerable watersheds in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and East Uttar Pradesh, advising residents to exercise caution amid the potential for heavy downpours.

In southern India, an increase in rainfall activity is anticipated from early November as a weather system approaches the Bay of Bengal. Scattered showers are likely to persist towards the end of October, followed by widespread rainfall from November 2 to 4 across Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, Telangana, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The IMD has also forecast isolated very heavy rainfall in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 2 and 3, with Telangana potentially experiencing thunderstorms and thundersqualls, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph.

While Delhi-NCR is expected to see improving weather conditions from November 1, several states across central, eastern, and southern India remain on alert for heavy rainfall in the coming days.
